graphics card for cs6, feb-2014

I've got to build another NLE computer. I'm running Adobe CS6 production premium suite, so I'll be running Win7 64 bit. Motherboard is likely going to be an Asus Z87 Expert (to get Thunderbolt), and an Intel i7-4770K processor.

I'd like to use a GTX-760 for graphics, but it didn't exist when CS6 was "current". My understanding, if I read Adobe's documentation correctly, is that I need a GTX-6xx card. I'm thinking the best (affordable) match will be the GTX-660.

Am I heading in the right direction? Can anyone point me in a better one?

For context, I'll be using this system mostly to film classes and make DVDs and Blu-rays. In my existing system (an Intel i7-930 quad core), it takes AME about three hours to render one hour of DVD content. IOW, I tend to work my CPU / GPU hard when needed, so more processing power is better.

Do you know about the trick to unlock cuda on some unsupported cards by editing cuda_supported_cards.txt?

I do. But it doesn't work on my laptop running a GTX 285M. AME will only make it like 20 minutes in when rendering with CUDA cores enabled. Then if falls over and dies. I have to render with software only with the "unsupported" 285M. So... I'm looking to avoid that problem with this new tower system; I'd rather use an Adobe approved and tested card. Hence my question.

After editing the Cuda text file, I was able to run my 4GB GTX 760 with Premiere CS6.

I could do that with that pitiful GTX 285m card too. But it didn't run well, as I said in post #5 above. So I'm still looking at a GTX-6xx card, so I don't have to do the "edit cuda.txt" dance, and I have a better chance (maybe) that the card will run well with cs6.

Probably a fools errand, I'll have to run down level NVIDIA drivers for it too. Sigh....

So, how well does your GTX-760 run with cs6? In particular, when doing a render via AME? Is it stable? Is it fast?

Don't be put off the txt-file fix because of your issues with the 285m - that card didn't work great for you because it's a less powerful, mobile-oriented card.

Any 700-series GTX card that has equal or better specs to the 600-series cards you are considering will work fine - just add it to the txt file!

I haven't had any crashes that I recall, but I probably don't use it nearly as often as others here since I'm primarily a 3D artist. Not sure how I would give you any kind of meaningful measure of speed.
