Graphic card for Premiere CS5!

I would like a graphic card that takes advantage of CS5 graphic card acceleration. However I can not use a graphic card that is too thick because my motherboard's PCI slots are too close to the PCI express slots, and I need those PCI slots.

What do youthink about this card?

GT 8800

Any suggestions?

My motherboard: Asus P6X58D-E

Both cards are not good enough. The GT 8800 is much too old and the GT 120 is to weak...

You need a GTX 285 (only GTX card supported) or a FX card (very expensive).
You can use a little work around to make other cards work with the Mercury Engine but they need at least 800 MB Ram and must support CUDA.

Future cards who are supposed to be supported by August are the Fermis...

So you'll have to see which of these cards will fit onto your board.

The "little workaround" is very easy. You just edit a simple text file to include you graphics card. I suggest you look for a GT240. Quite cheap and does the job just fine.

Perhaps the Quadro FX 3800. I just don't know if it is thin enough to allow for a PCI slot next to it. Also, I think it handles only one monitor. I use dual displays.

Just look at the specs.

It has one DVI, two display port. So you can, from the looks of it, run 3 monitors at once. And it seems to only occupy one slot so you should be fine.

You don't need a GTX285 or Quadro card! Get a GT240 or GTS250 and be happy with it.

The problem, at least with the 250, is it takes up two slots. He doesn't have room for for that with his motherboard (earlier thread). I had a GeForce 9600 GT that took up only one slot. I only got rid of it because it only had 512 MB of RAM, and the little workaround requires at least 768. But any GeForce card that is CUDA enabled and has 768MB of RAM will work.

That said, you might also want to start looking at switch your other cards to ones that use PCIe, and take advantage of the USB 3.0 on your board.

Okay now i'm interested in the "work around" method. How exactly do I achive this and what card would i need to buy that has the proper amount of horsepower?

Google something like "Mercury engine CUDA hack", and you'll find it (I'm too lazy to find the actual thread from a few weeks back).

Basically, it's an extremely simple software hack (all you do is ad a line to a .txt file) that will allow any nVidia card that is CUDA enabled and has more than 768MB of RAM to be used with the Mercury Engine. Some will have more horsepower than others, but any that meet the above two requirements will work to some degree. Definitely not endorsed by Adobe, but I haven't read of any issues people have with it.

"CUDA" is what nVidia calls their technology that allows hardware acceleration on their cards. It actually stands for something, but I forget what. Premiere CS5 and the Mercury Playback Engine are designed to take advantage of it if you have one of the officially supported cards (there's only about 4 or 5), but the hack/work around allows you to use any CUDA enabled card with sufficient memory.
