Grandaddy in 24p

We caught up with popular US touring act, Grandaddy, prior to their performance at New York City's Irving Plaza. The band discusses their new album Sumday, the recording process and their recent tour with Pete Yorn.

The interview was filmed with the Panasonic DVX100 at 24p normal (F5). We lit the room with 1-ARRI 300+ fresnel and mic'd Jim Fairchild and Jason Lytle with an Audio Technica floor mic. The interesting thing about the setting was the room's ceiling - gold flake paint - predomindant red walls, asian murals and leopard-skin couch. We bounced the light off the ceiling which produced a warm, complimtenary skin tones.

For some reason, the web-version of the interview is much darker than the broadcast version. I made attempts to increase the brightness and gamma, as best I could, during Internet web compression.

Jim and Jason cutaway flashes were also filmed with the Panasonic DVX100. The band provided us with an EPK and we used the footage for additional b-roll. The EPK looks to be filmed with a 3-chip camera and a fisheye lense (studio footage, skateboarding footage). I duplicated all EPK footage in the FCP4 timeline, deinterlaced upper and lowers, blured and lowered the opacity on the upper clip to achieve a filmier look.

All audio ("AM 180" "Now It's On" and "El Caminos in the West) is courtesy of Grandaddy and V2 Records .

Re: Grandaddy in 24p

Thanks for the kudos. Although this was the fatest edit I've ever done... It was the trickiest. Their answers were long and drawn out. Not to mention their thoughts were all over the place. Most of the audio is spliced together so I could cut out the unusable parts. The video from the audio cuts is hidden beneath the b-roll since the footage would have been jumpy. It was a fun challenge.

you wanna talk about tricky editing...here is what im working on at the moment.

The content may being BORING AS HELL to all those not in the medical field. This container (the screens) will be replaced by animated robot type screens with arms to make it a little more interesting later hence the high tech intro. I did it this way to hit the deadline for a meeting.
Back to the editing... talk about hard to get a straight idea from the russian guys being english is the second lanquage. I practically put the words in their mouth. You can see the edits with the head movements fading and jumping but thats the best I can squeeze out of it. The supporting footage was scarce too because its close to impossible to get permission to film in a hospital. I wanted to get each of them doing their thing in the hospitals to go with what they are talking about.
And talk about hard to film places...Vents pumping out noise everywhere! I had to compress, pull, bite, equalize, hump all the audio to get it close to being unified. AND ALL THE STUDDERS THESE GUYS DID!! GOD!! I was going crazy.
Ok. Enough about this... I wasnt going to post this originally but since the topic of hard editing came up.
