Grand Theft Auto V breakes record with 800 MILLION in sales

No, No and thrice no!

Hollywood seems to be in a phase of doing remakes (badly), Sequels (badly) and turning games into films (badly) we don't need another one.

If they could develop a good story around the characters it would be OK but they tend to loose plot and dialogue in favour of special effects and explosions.

(I am starting to sound like my Dad :-)

3 guys locally waited in line and got their games close to closing time at a game store here, and then were robbed at gun point. The thief stuck a pistol into a guys mouth and said give my your games or I'll blow your heads off.

Which if I'm not mistaken, is pretty much the flavor of this game. Sad sad sad!

That's never been the flavor of GTA. There's always been a very high level of ironic satire in those games.
What the robber you describe did was just stupid and unnecessary.

Having played GTA and watched my sones playing many more hours I would say that is exactly the flavour of GTA.

Cost about $265mil to produce, market and distribute. I'm wondering about the legs on this thing: what are the numbers it will ultimately reach over the next year or two? Is this the Avatar of video games, or the Avengers?

Considering the new online component (not yet launched) and the quality Rockstar DLC that players usually pick up in droves I'd imagine GTA V will basically print money. GTA IV came out in '08 and by late '12 it had sold over 25 million copies.

Wow. I had no idea it costs so much to produce. That's like more than Avatar.

Not sure if this is sarcasm or not, but GTA V actually cost way less than Avatar. The $265mil is how much it took to produce, market, and distribute the game. Fox & friends put in about $400mil to produce, market and distrib Avatar worldwide, even though the actual production budget was around $250mil.

Since GTA V passed $1bil already in its first 3 days, it's all but guaranteed to total over $1.7bil over the next year, maybe far sooner. Avatar's $400mil cost was about 15% of its $2.6bil global take, and $1.7bil is what GTA V would need to match that profit ratio (6.5:1).

Though, I've read that there are tons of extra costs associated with game launches, including disc manufacture fees from Microsoft and Sony, etc., that eat into a game's profits. But like adkimery said, this game is essentially destined to print money.

I wonder what it's like to be on that company board of directors or whatever you call them, the owners and just sit there watching the money just utterly pour in second after second. 1 billion in 3 days... thats $3858 every second...

If that's the budget for production as well as marketing and distribution, it's not even close to Avatar.

EDIT: Looks like I was too late on that one.
