Grainy picture normal?

Im using Vegas 9 Pro, and when I am on the capture video part on the programme, I enlarge the video as big as it will go, I notice the whole picture is really grainy, is this normal?

If I make the picture smaller there is much less grain. I dont recall seeing this much grain when played on my tv.

How can I reduce grain?

Sorry Ive posted this in Vegas section as well but realised it prob shouldnt go there.

This "Grain" is the normal resolution of standard-def video. (Although underexposing increases grain artifacting).

"TV"s displays are different from computer monitors and standard-def looks fine on them. Standard-def is what you were watching until high-def came along.

There is a software product called "Neat Video" that can lessen the grain to a decent degree. But proper exposure is always the best place to start fighting grain.

You need more light and that will reduce the noise considerably. The more light= less noise. If you are colour correcting the footage make sure your underexpose a little but when shooting and then boost up the contrast, and all those goodies.

hello, I'd like to add some questions to this thread...

Can anyone tell me the best settings to have for the camera in order to reduce grain in 24p mode?

and, DPStewart, are you saying that, even though the picture looks grainy in editing, it will look much better on a regular tv screen?

Thanks for the help!

That has been my experience with picture tube TV's.

I used to shoot on a crappy Handycam and in editing the grain was awful, but when I burned a VERY high quality DVD (Adobe ENCORE at highest possible quality settings) I was surprised to see it looked better, more normal, on regular TV's.

to reduce noise/grain you can increase the detail coring and decrease the master ped in camera, decrease sharpness a little (cant remember which setting that is at the moment) ,and add more light.
