grainy footage...

OK...I'm a little concerned....this is the deal:

I've spent a full weekend with crew shooting the beginning of a music video...I shot it in 24P and overall the footage/compesitions look great.
But late last night while chopping it all up I've started noticing firstly that its pretty darn grainy...and secondly that I'm getting jaggered edges on some of it.

Now I'm the eternal optimist and am hoping that this is normal and that output will be fine. I'll try post a few frames so u can see what i'm on about...

So is this something that i need to be worried about?, can be rectified?, fcp settings? or what? cos I've still got 2 more solid weekends of shooting.

I'm sure this is giving me stomach ulcers...

Re: grainy footage...

wouldnt have anything to do with 24P vs shooting in 24PA would it?
I'm really sweating here...put me out of my misery please.

Some tips on the jaggerd edges...

Make sure your canvas in FCP is sized to 100% or check your footage with an external monitor.

I've found that viewing/editing on my laptop at smaller sizes can reveal jagged edges....they disapear, or at least are greatly diminished, when I resize or go to a different monitor.

Also, I've heard that using the Thick Detail setting in the scene files can help....I personaly can't see the difference.

Re: grainy footage...

I'll check tonight what my settings were and let ya know.

I really need to check what the footage looks like on a normal tv monitor. Its all just been a bit of a rush and normally I'd have a camera man (who really knows his equipment)- as opposed to me shooting it. Anyway will check it out and let ya know.

thanks

Re: grainy footage...

Gain, cinegamma_d and the cinelike matrix all add a good deal of noise to any area that's not extremely well lit. Detail coring can also contribute noise if it's cranked down. If you lit well, however, the problems you're having shouldn't be as serious as they sound. Try turning the matrix to normal and make sure gain is off. Also, light is your friend! You can always close the iris or use the ND filter, but you can't add light, except with gain which adds tons of noise.

Re: grainy footage...

Right were the settings i was using...all was shot outside on a relatively sunny day. Let me know what you guys think.

detail -2
vdetail level- -2
detail coring- +6
chroma leve-l -4
chroma phase- 0
colour temp- -4
master ped- -4
gamma- cinelike
matrix- norm
skin tone dtl- off
v detail freq- thin
progressive- 24p(a)

and obviously tweaking iris and shutter speeds depending on light.
filters used were a black diffusion .5 for CU's and an ND filter for almost everything else.
