"grainy" footage

So I've had my dvx100a for a little over a year now. Lately I have been noticing that when I get home and the log the clips my footage ( I film skateboarding) looks not so clear. It looks kind of grainy almost. For example I filmed yesterday at about 5pm so the lighting was still good with a shutter of 1/500 with the ND filter on to get the iris open as much as possible. Everything else was just default settings except for white balancing and tweaking the color temp a little bit. Also I checked the gain control its set at low (0).

Does any know why the footage isn't looking as clear as I want? I can post screen shots later, I'm at work right now. :)

Even outside in the sun? I had it at 1/500 and it was overexposed so I turned the nd filter on and opened the iris. Should I just use 1/250? Even for fast action like skateboarding? I try to avoid the motion blur it makes when slow-mo'd with low shutter speeds.

I also shoot skating and I usually shoot at 1/120, sometimes 1/ 250 but i don't think that will have anything to do with the grain issue. Maybe try not having your iris open. When filming skating I usually try to keep it at around F5.6. Seems to work for me

The same thing just happened to me I was filming a wedding and it looked crystal clear and five minustes later the picture was grainy but I didn't notice it till I downloaded the footage then on the next shoot I made sure the grain was on low but it happened again. Not really sure why

i use 1/250 with my 100a for skating during all times of the day! i also use my ND filters to the fullest. I find better results with just using the 1/8 nd over the 1/64

haha, so funny , I never get such problems

Anyhow--now for some actual constructive criticism...

It's a general rule not to use your shutter to control your light. I wouldn't go over 1/250 and close down your iris a bit to compensate or remove nd filter to correctly expose.
Jim is right- at 1/500 you would need LOTS of light. Less light means more noise.

try this:
ND OFF
sht 250 , 500 max
Gain (obviously) Low
zebra at 100
take some quick adjustments, shoot something hot and turning down the iris untill all zebra just barely disappears.
