Grainy / crappy quality IDK WHY???

Also as part of using auto exposure its because most of the time im just run and gun and dont have time to mess with setting. I shot in TN one time with manual and had good clips but it was just to time much adjusting all the time. Another thing is since im in dust and mud and sometimes a water truck will go by or some i have a bag coving my camera.

You may want to use Auto Iris only then, to leave everything up to the camera is just not a good idea. You can tweak the sensitivity of the Auto Iris in the scene file settings. I have mine on -1 since I found it slightly overexposing more then it should.

As for shutter speed -- for most video shooting you should stick it on 1/60th, period. Nothing else (unless you're in PAL territory, in which case it should be 1/50th). For "live" looking footage, 1/60th is the right shutter whether it's 720/60p or 1080/60i. The only reason to go to 1/120 is if you're shooting 720/60p and intend to use it as slow-mo footage.

(or, if you're trying to make a special super-stuttery-looking shot)

But for normal video-style motion, and the best light sensitivity, and the least grain in the images, stick with 1/60th as your normal shutter speed; in daylight or tungsten and shooting 24p you can also go with 1/50th.

In manual mode I dont remember auto iris going into gain.... ? Dont know if thats what your saying... And my 2 preset switches are the 6 and 12db gain.

DOH! Sorry, I warped conversations -- on the HMC40/HMC80 it goes into gain. On the HMC150 it won't, unless you put the auto/manual switch into "auto". When in "auto" mode it can indeed automatically add gain. But I just checked and this is an HMC150 discussion, I had HMC40 in my head for some reason. I'll go edit that part out to avoid confusion for future readers, sorry!

It's really hard to tell from that clip....it goes by so fast...but I didn't see any noise. What are you viewing on....is your monitor calibrated?
Also, did you end up doing a black balance and did you end up going to a different shutter speed?

Just viewed again, and stopped playback at several points...it looks good to me, esp. considering it's compressed 3rd hand footage.

What I meant by third hand footage is that you shoot it...it goes to your NLE, then it gets posted to you tube. I meant no insult by it at all, because like I said I think what you shot looks good and I saw no noise in the footage.

Are you talking about macroblocking?? I dont see noise... its usually only visible in darker underexposed areas of the footage.... which yours doesn't have.

You are shooting in PH mode (highest quality) right?

Regardless of what 'others' are shooting... you dont need to be above 1/120 shutter at 60fps for action shots. Ive shot a ton of sports at that and loved the results. No matter WHAT you want to be at 0 gain, especially since its daylight.

Here is an article on noise... http://www.productionapprentice.com/featured/the-truth-about-video-gain-and-how-to-use-it-properly/

I did notice noise when freeze framed at full 720 size. Mostly near edges. Is it like this on the source files?

A couple questions (you may have said this but I skimmed the thread and might have missed it.)

  1. What are your Scene file settings?
  2. Have you tried a system reset?

What I usually do is turn up detail coring all the way up in any scene file I'm in, then in post I'll use Magic Bullet Denoiser or the TMTS black diffusion plugin to get rid of any residual noise.
