Grain?

I am aware that grain on DVX footage is ok, and actualy makes it look filmic IMHO, but I did have a short piece aired on local TV and the look of the footage versus the broadcasts before and after my piece made me wonder wether I should always be keeping the gain to Low when possibe? is M & H truly acceptabel when going to broadcast?

Re: Grain?

Me - I'd never let something be broadcast with gain on unless I absolutely had to (like night, news event type footage). Otherwise, you light so you don't need gain. Gain degrades the image, don't use it unless you have to. But sometimes you have to.

Re: Grain?

Yeah like when you are shooting with available light and as the day goes on you start loosing light! (some of us just cant afford big lighting sometimes!)

Re: Grain?

i am not an educated TV-cameraman, but our guys here NEVER use the gain on their Betacams. They say it will not be broadcast unless it is indeed News-stuff that has to go on. or maybe a concert or such. i would stay away from the gain as much as you can.

Re: Grain?

It is always a very last resort. If you need to go to 3db, I have my high at 6DB, anything higher should be used for earthquakes, or the bigfoot.

Re: Grain?

I agree.
Gain is a no no unless you absolutely can't avoid it or little green men are sneeking up the road in the dead of the night.
