Grain remover application

Re: Grain remover application

Didn't see much of a difference in any of it except in that last picture with the green building. Even then, it wasn't anything that a simple (.001) gaussian blur can't achieve.

Re: Grain remover application

araujofh,

I,m really impressed ! thanks for the info.

do they have a Mac application ?

Re: Grain remover application

you call that grain removal? looks more like the smoothiefier. detail is lost!

Re: Grain remover application

Dudes that is a free application.
He probably wrote that in a few days. Are you expecting anything really professional? Then, you have to spend money.

I just thought it was interesting for a small application.

Anyway, all the best

Fidel.

Re: Grain remover application

These grain removing softwares are fine, but I do not know how they would affect the overall quality of ur DVX footage otherwise. Araufojh...thanx for indicating anyway.

Over the past 9 months my own experience about the ways to reduce the amount of grain on a footage has changed my perceptions, I would say dramatically.

While lighting is important....u cannot ALWAYS control it to ur max advantage. I have seen that one can reduce almost 90-95% of grain by properly white balancing the scene and tweaking the detail coring settings....BTW without losing any detail. The remaining 5-10% grain can be controlled by adjusting your detail level, with some trade off between the amount of grain and the minute detail.

In fact my idea of the detail my DVX100A can capture has also changed considerably, eversince I have tried to dig more deeply into the issue of white balancing the scenes properly. The footage of my latest trip to Finland is unbeleivably better, both in terms of lesser grain and better detail as comparted to the shots I had taken earlier.

Re: Grain remover application

Really?

I did not know that white balancing can affect the amount of grain...so directly.

any other comments?

Re: Grain remover application

Yes. That is true. At least that is what I have experienced.

I have found proper white balancing to be particularly helpful in low light conditions.

Re: Grain remover application

Well,

I haven't done much low light tests with the DVX. So, I can't really say much.

But, I will try a few tests now that you mentioned.

All the best

Fidel.

Re: Grain remover application

Adobe After Effects 6.5 has some wonderful grain management tools if you need em.

Re: Grain remover application

In re: to white balancing to reduce grain/noise ...

I come from the old school theory that white balancing introduces noise into the picture ...

due to the 3 amps (1 for each CCD) having to individually adjust to achieve white.

I almost never white balance (even on my IKE proHD camera at work) -- something I learned 15 years ago when I was learning the biz ...The Amps now a days are probably cleaner ... but I'm a creature of habit -- and it's never failed me.

I almost always use presets -- the only time I will white balance if I'm shooting in mixed light.

If footage needs tweeking I'll color correct in post via AVID -- and even then I don't color correct just to make whites - white -- I color correct to make flesh tones accurate. Which is another reason I almost never white balance -- flesh tones aren't accurate after white balancing and -- and then it's harder to correct the flesh tones in post. By accurate, I mean matching to how your eye sees the flesh tones in the scene.

I would be interested to see if there's more (or less) noise in the picture in a low-light situation if one did (or didn't) white balance.

Re: Grain remover application

Jay Sanchez, the 5600K white balance is much noisier than the 3200K white balance setting. Apparently, shooting through an 85B filter is a great way to use the 3200K white balance setting and not need to do extreme color correction later.

Re: Grain remover application

I just use soap and water to remove my grain. :D

Grain surgery is good but takes really long to render for some reason.
