can anyone recommend me any resources that might teach me about[FONT='PrimaSans BT,Verdana,sans-serif'] grain pattern as a subject in itself? or is there anyone out there who knows about this stuff?

i would like to become an expert in codecs and formats and compressions. how formats, (especially the formats from my camera the hpx500 - dvcproHD) goes about making up the image, its systems, etc. and how my camera can work to my advantage in creating grain patterns, artifacting and textures.
are there scientists who design grain patterns, or are they random based on the light?
what about the conversion of the non-HD chips, how they generate a HD signal. is it just upscaling like interpolation or is there a more complex method of throwing the pixels together?
