Grain.. once again!

Hi. Finaly my first post after having read and learned so much in this wonderful forum!

I know the topic of grain -or video noise- has been discused quite often here and I tried to suck every bit of information into my brain, but somehow I can't find the solution to my problem.

I pick up A LOT of grain in my pictures. It gets especially noticeable when shooting without any camera movement (tripod). As I've read here this of course could be caused due to bad lightning, no focus, etc.. But I'm really freaked out by the amount of grain in my whole picture (not only just the dark areas).

I shot this with a DVX100BE (PAL) in F1-Standart-Setting with GAIN set to OFF, and every auto-function OFF as well.

I would apreciate If someone tells me his opinion on what might cause the strong amount of grain.

here a short sample http://www.kmmp.biz/grain.avi (5, 9MB - captured with Premiere 1.5, no compression! )

As I own this camera only for about 4 months I hope someone will tell me that it is my lack of skill that causes the grain and not that it comes from a damage of the camera. I recently got the "Unplayable Tape (Other Format)" Error and some mosaic-artefacts and will get a cleaning tape as soon as possible. Is it known that dirty heads might cause more grain in your pictures?

Thank you in advance,

Konrad

Dirty heads do not cause grain. Have you tried different gamma curves? Also, avoid the all open iris setting, use something like F-4.0, seems to reduce the grain a bit.

that is 100% normal, dont worry about that.

if you play around with the gamma curves as mentioned, some stuff might happen, but it really depends on the lighting as well. having nice highlights in your picture will definately cause the lower sectiosn of light ot have a bit more grain.

Thank you guys for the quick replies!

That's what I wanted to hear :) ;)
I was just worried because the grain is nearly in every part of the picture and like a overall flickering/noise. Also I pick up this grain in nearly every "still" shot (outside, inside, sunny day, cloudy day) and thought this high amout of grain was mostly a 25P/24P thing... Well I'll try to make some test with different gamma curves!

Any more comments and oppinions are welcome!

yeah man, just shoot somewhere that is nicely lit. try to keep your F stop between 2.0 and 8.

then just play around with colour correction settings either in camera or in your editor. tons of fun and you can amke your stuff look from video to film.
