Grading S log - what I've learn - what I still need to learn.

Here's the test video I shot and graded in FCP (720p quicktime version):

here's the Vimeo version:

So per Mac's advice - I protected the highlights when I shot.

I was able in 3 way color corrector to bring down the highlights, push the mids, and lower the shadows to keep sky detail and keep detail on the models face. I added a little blue to the shadows, added film grain thru FCP's own "add noise" plug in - just .2 at 20 percent opacity. I also sharpened the image with "sharpen" to plus 20.

please let me know what you think and if you have any feedback.

I will try to post some ungraded s-log footage recorded to Pro Res HQ soon.

thanks,
Ed

p.s. if it says "forbidden" try to refresh to see it.

This one looks really great, especially the shots on the roof top. I like the look but the shadows are almost entirely blue on my monitor. I was also wondering what your detail settings were? Keep the s-log footage coming, will get my F3 next week and I'm really starting to fall in love with the look of the highlights with the upgrade. By the way it was a really tough choice between the F3 and the Red MX.

Some thing about Slog and the Color fidelity it produces is amazing.

When we were grading the Vegas stuff, the one thing the Colorist noted was that he felt the color accuracy was on par with much higher end stuff. F35/Genesis stuff....

According to him, far better than MX.

Ditto. Lose the blue. I'm tempted to have another look at getting S-log. i need the 10-bit recorder first. Come on Sound Devices!

didn't you hear? blue/yellow is the new orange teal.

Damn. Behind the eight-ball again.

Edit: Looking at Jason's photos it's a clear link to retro. It's definitely an interesting look, but I expect it will be over-used and not be a long-term thing. Not mad on the Hugo grade, but it's Martin Scorcese, so what do I know.
