Grad Filters & Noise

Hi there,

how is your expirience with graduated Filters. I noticed that i get quiete good noise or some kind of artifacting in the upper areas when using stronger grad Filters and when I sometimes little underexpose 2/3-1 stop, especially stronger ones or combined ones i.e. 0.9 or combined 0.9+0.6. Had also one situation where just a 0.9 Filter was enought to see already artifacting/noise.

Iam not expirienced with videography since I did start two weeks ago and photographing with raw is a lot more forgiveable, well it gives me a lot less noise than with 8-bit video of course.

What is your advice here, Iam of course trying to get more practice to see the limits with 8-bit video but maybe there are some hints.

I tried to upload some seconds of a more extreme light situation, used two grad filters here and I get heavy noise with 160 ISO. Unfortuantely I get bad pixelation on youtube.

Whats going on here, did render the video with a high bitrate - pixelation is the same with lower bitrate or max bitrate, 1920x1080, Mainconcept AVC/AAC (did try also Sony AVC). I guess I did hit the limitation of 8-bit video or how is your expirience with grad filters in more extreme light situation outdoor ?

Nobody else has some expirience using grad filters outside ?

Maybe you´re getting the infamous banding problem, search about that, there are a thread in this forum regarding these problem! Mi theory: GH2 captures video in 8bits directly, not 14bits downstreamed to 8bits like JPEG...
