Grabs from The Radio Mechanics

Re: Grabs from The Radio Mechanics

This is some of the best work I have seen using the DVX100. It is stemming not only from operator skills but the pro use of lighting. Awesome Awesome Awesome.

Re: Grabs from The Radio Mechanics

Have to say these look fantastic.

Excellent job on getting that tabloid/comic-book science fiction look. It's a personal favorite of mine. And it's nice to see how the camera performs in space.

By the way, the last shot of the trailer is fantastic. Can't wait to see more of it.

Re: Grabs from The Radio Mechanics

YESSS! THIS IS WHAT I'VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT!!! :) :) :)

Work like this one make me proud of being a DVX100A owner... from what I saw, the talents were PRO. I want to see the whole movie now. When are you releasing it?

Re: Grabs from The Radio Mechanics

Would someone wanna post a direct link to the trailer?

I couldn't find it.

Re: Grabs from The Radio Mechanics

Thanks everyone for the kind remarks! You know, you work on something long enough and you lose all objectivity. The feedback is appreciated.

John - Thanks. Your check's in the mail.

Slimothy - Officially, this was a "no-budget" project. Actual out of pocket expense is unknown and I don't think I want to know. Various things had to be built or obtained and if it wasn't borrowed or donated, we (the exec producers) just forked it over. It wasn't that bad. It was mostly time and the resources available at our fingertips.

Carlos - Lighting consisted of an Arri Softback I kit. Key was a 1K with softbox and eggcrate. Smaller units for accents. Love those fresnels. There were rarely more than two or three units in use at a time, not including practicals. In a couple of scenes we added a theatrical follow spot. For the radio station I built a coop light with diffusion and a skirt to control spill. For the scene where the character is taking a leak, we hung two hardware store single lamp flourescents just inside the door. I ran power for one fixture through a box with a momentary switch and had a guy press the button randomly to simulate a bad ballast.

Roman - We should have screener copies on DVD (for festivals) sometime in December. The guys are scoring it now and when that's finished we'll do the final 5.1 audio mix. The plan is to create a full-featured DVD shortly after that.

Re: Grabs from The Radio Mechanics

That really is some impressive stuff. Although I question the redeeming value of the story, haha, sorry. No, but your lighting is really good. Thanks, it was quite inspiring.

WOW ;D

Very very nice. I like that shot with the guy at the toilet. The film looks really promising.

Oh man, and the dream walk through the tunnell. Amazing!

Keep it coming.

Peace,
Steve

Loving these grabs - good luck with the movie - are you doing it for business or for pleasure?

Thanks! This is a calling card project that we hope to parlay into bigger things - so a little of both.
how was the earth scene created?
That was a VideoTraxx (Nasa) clip from Digital Juice. A lot of that inexpensive stock stuff is pretty poor looking so we pulled it into AE and did some "grain reduction" with some temporal filtering and it made an amazing difference. The shot in the final film includes a satellite orbiting as well. I found a government web site (the content of which is in the public domain) with some pictures of satellites. Found one I liked, modified and color corrected, then animated it over the stock shot. The stock shot looks better in the final film than the trailer.

Re: Grabs from The Radio Mechanics

Thanks! Jonathan Johnson and I adapted his short story last winter/spring and wrote the screenplay in our spare time. We put together our production team in May. Cast in June. Began principle photog in July, shooting primarily at night. Finished near the end of July. We all have day jobs (I have a full-time production company) so we took it easy and worked on post again in our spare time. I guess we'll be looking at about a year from start to finish - whew, time flies!
