Grabs from The Penguin

its a comedy about a good guy vs. a bad guy.
here's a tip: don't pay your extras with beer. THE most stressful night of my life.
fortunately, when the bad guy enters the bar, he tells everybody to get on the floor. so when we shoot the coverage we won't need all the extras. thank god.

I don't know about anyone else, but I love the grain in these shots. It suits the environment from what I can tell. I especially like the 5th screen grab, did you CC these. Nice work :)

Film Grain

Film Grain

Hey, TheMac. It's nice you're shooting something, but (and I hate this because lately I've been handing out crits like crazy) The film grain looks like it was laid over video-y looking footage. Meaning it doesn't seem imbedded into the image. Something seems...off. Still, cheers to anyone who actually posts stuff (unlike me). But, hey
when I do get around to it you guys can blow up my stuff as well.

I'm undecided about the grain but i like the colors... i like that colorfull look where you get different neon looking colors pouring in all over the place :). If anything I'd exaggerate those colors

In all honesty, the grain does not work for me. I actually tried to remove some of it with grain surgery but even that didn't do much plus took awhile to render. The Bar could of used alittle more light. Was this shot with the DVX? I like your colors but alittle more light could of been good. The only kind of grain I like is film grain.

It was tough, Lost some detail with it,..

looks too grainy for my tastes

what kind of settings did you use to shoot this? Did you boost the gain or something?

man, nobody likes the grain, huh? i actually added it using brightness/contrast (an idea i got from john hudson) so there's no need for grain surgery. at first i liked it but you guys are making me second guess my original judgement. hmm. i do like the blue highlights that bluespider got rid of. well i've got another night of shooting coming up tomorrow so i guess i'll see how i'm feeling once i'm ready to cut. thanks for all the comments!

Grain is cool on that Flaming Lips doc "fearless freaks"
or on an Anton Corbijn vid
but not on an action flick, or comedy
unless it's like a "dream" sequence or something like that.

that grain surgery worked out great!!!!

It's all personal taste. Who knows, the grain could thematically emphasize the tone of the piece. Placing judgement on the grain before actually seeing the piece is jumping the gun a little bit.
