Grabs from the Pacific Coast

All,

Here are a few grabs from the Pacific Coast Highway I took yesterday.

I used the standard F6 setting with a polarizing filter shot in squeeze mode with 1/64 ND Filter. I haven't done any post-production on these images--straight capture to still.

It would've been (REALLY) nice to have a UV filter yesterday as well since it was VERY hazy, but alas, I don't have one yet. ND grad would've been nice as well...

I have a few questions related to these images if someone would be nice enough to answer:

1) The aliasing and pixelizing due to the poor resolution of squeeze mode is very obvious in these grabs (especially in the flower--yuck!). Does this look about right for squeeze mode? (Maybe I did something wrong) How does material shot in squeeze look on HDTVs? Is it distracting?

(I decided to go with squeeze over the anamorphic because the anny puts so many limitations on MOD, focal depth, etc)

2) There's quite a bit of noise in the skies. Not sure why, but I guess it's just an artifact of the DV compression?

I'd appreciate comments/suggestions.

Thanks!

Re: Grabs from the Pacific Coast

PCH is epic.  A highly recommended drive.  Great shots. Look at the way the Polarizer takes the glare off that water! That green just comes through. NIce.

Thanks John,

I'm quite the newbie so I appreciate hearing support from a more experienced videographer such as yourself.

I'll post more grabs online, I left out alot of good (said very humbly) ones.

Im not that experienced! :P

I see the interlace issues on the grabs but just seeing PCH is a treat! Nice to hear you are using Filters; definatley get a UV ASAP!

Yeah John when I recover from my most recent purchases, a UV & ND grad are on the top of my list.

Yes the PCH is a treat to see--and it's nice because all of these pictures were taken about 10-15 minutes from my house :).

Alas, military orders have me moving across the country this week :(.

Ohh Man the PCH,
I got to take 2 weeks to do the drive from Vancouver to LA, we camped the whole time.  It is a spectaular drive and the pix brought back alot of memories...northern CA and Southern Oregon is amazing.

Thanx for the pix...someday I will live in Mendicino :D

Also if you are near Mendicino there is an amazing music store there called Lark in the Morning...worth the drive.

"It's almost as nice as BC". ;D

Re: Grabs from the Pacific Coast

Lark in the morning... Isn't that the unusual instrument store? If not, there is a store in San Fran down by the piers that imports all kinds of unique instruments from all over the world. And it's so cool because people who now live in San Fran come down to the store and will play these instruments from their native countries, anyway... really cool.
