Grabs from "Detour" Short Film

I didn't know that there was another short film named Detour on here. Thats neat. I am sure that mine and that one are not alike. Mine isnt a huge film or anything. My friend and I just went out on a whim and shot some stuff. I just got my camera so I wanted to "play" with it. I would like to see the other video if someone wants to link it?

the .3GP file on your page doesn't seem to run on my quicktime 7.1 (windows).
any chance of uploading a good ol' .mov version?

huh, thats weird. I compresses it with the h.264 codec and it works fine on my new quicktime. What do you think could be the prob? I could prob. upload a .mov byut the only way I could get good quality les than 170 mb is the h.264 codec. any ideas. Im kind of new to compression and I am using the adobe media encoder in the Premiere Pro CS3.

i'll try running it on my mac G5.

excellent stills, BTW... congrats! your images convince me that 35mm adapters are not always the only answer to make stuff look good with the HVX.

Thanks a lot. As a student it took me two years to save for my camera. I cant let another $2000 worth of stuff keep me from shooting any longer. I often feel that in independent films the shallow depth of field is used way to much. Its really only necessary when you want to make sure your audience focuses on one specific thing. All I have to do is back the camera up a bit and zoom in and I have decent DOF. I am looking into a new compression method as well. Thanks

New file being uploaded.

New file being uploaded.

Ok, I am uploading a new file. It is a plain old quicktime .mov but it is a little lareger than the previous. It is about 100 mb. It is currently being uploaded to my website and it should be up and ready in about 30 minutes. Hope this is a little easier.

Matt, 3gp didn't run on my mac as well. But I watched the youtube version.

Re looks I think it's great. Yes, blacks are crushed etc etc. But I think that adds to the feel of the short. IMHO, adding back the detail lost because of your settings wouldn't help in anything. Actually, I think the lack of detail is what makes it creepy.

However, I think you could tweak a few things re line of action and direction of movement. The talent moves to the right, then to the left of the screen. The he sees something to his left, fade, and the we see him running to the left (I would expect him to run away from 'it', to his right). His placement was confusing to me, so unless you intended that, maybe it would feel better not to break the rules... just my 2 cents...

I appreciate your input and I will go back and look at what is going on but I did kind of mix things up a bit to try and confuse a little. I wanted a feeling of "whats going on, where is he?" I kind of need the car on that side because that is where it was in the beginning. Also, the new .mov high res version is now up on the site if you are interested.. Also, another thing I noticed was that the video on youtube is MUCH darker than the original.

You can mirror (flip) some of the clips so as to fix lines of action. Again, maybe it's just my baloney, maybe others think the short is fine just the way it is.

Hey mb72378! Just wanted to drop you a line saying that I really like your footage. You may have mentioned this but did you run default settings on your HVX?
I'm pretty new at this game but once again, nice work.

Yes, all the settings are default. I shot this about 3 weeks after I got the camera so I didn't know a whole lot about how to use the settings. The only thing I did do to the footage was in post tweak the brightness and contrast. But everything what shot with a stock HVX on factory settings.
