Grabs from a horror short

I just discovered that the school over here, which is going to be completely destructed in a few weeks, is the perfect location for a horror movie! Really reminds me of Doom3 when walking around in the dark corridors down in the cellars and stuff. :)

Now here you got the grabs, looks good?

Shot on DVX100E, all on 1/25 because of the low light present. Finally something GREAT about the school where I was tortured for a year!

Glad you like'em guys! :)

Well coffee, after 3 days of walking inside without access (got chased out a couple of times lol), I asked a lady who was some kind of a head/boss/manager or something. "Would you mind if I filmed some stuff inside?" "Sure, film as much as you want!" :cheesy:

Well, guess that part of the reason me and my bud got access was because we are still kids (12 and 14) and don't look too professional yet, just with an old rusty tripod, no lightning and a dvx  .

Now what I filmed was mostly just a test on how the camera handled the lightning and so on, I'm in the middle of rushing up a script for a real horror film or something, to shoot before they tear the whole place down  I'ts kinda funny... Now I want to save our old, dirty school :undecided

Bwaaahahahahaaaa!

A thousand jaws just dropped to the floor!:cheesy:

Kid... if you're already doing stuff that looks this good... with proper use of dutch-angles and effective framing... you're gonna' be a great filmmaker one day! Did you enter the zombie-fest? Man I wish you did... just from these grabs it already looks like you coulda' put the rest of us to shame!

I agree with the previous post that says the 3rd grab is the only one that's a little weak... and THAT'S only in comparison to the others which are VERY good!

Bwahahaha lol! Well yes, it's true, I really am 14. Some people say I grow up really fast :) Sorry to disappoint you, but I was planning to enter the zombie contest, but never came up with a good script for it, and I don't have a make-up artist either  . That is actually where my great weakness comes into the picture, I'm not really good at telling stories and making sense with my movies yet, but people say the cinematography usually is pretty good. Now I suddenly felt really small, am I the youngest DVX owner here?

I'm going down there tonight again to look for some power inside, so that I can bring some more light when shooting the final movie! :)

Damn dude... you probably are... for that matter you probably better put that beer down too...

I only WISH we had a kid like you around here... the thing that sucks for me is I can't leave somebody else run the camera 'cause so far nobody else can do it... or maybe they just don't take it seriously? I don't know, but every time I try to appear in something myself those shots suck! The other issue is having a good cinematographer would allow me to run sound... and the way it is now I usually have a choice of good picture or good sound! That sucks 'cause how do you decide?

I guess what I'm trying to say is you definitely have a skill and a DP's eye for the shot. My nephew is 16 and he could never get this stuff.

Oh and what's this, "I never came up with a good script... etc... etc..." stuff? Do you think that stopped the rest of us? Boy are YOU gonna' be in for a surprise when you see how crappy some of our zombie shorts are! (as much as it hurts to say this I guarantee mine won't be the only one that sucks)

The next contest that comes along... you BETTER be in it!

Thanks man! I'll definately be in the next contest! :)

Now there is the thing I've been wondering my ass off about.. What does really "DP" stand for? Directive Producer? Or is it something similar to Director of Photography?

Director of Photography... the guy who chooses how to frame, focus, and follow the action after the script and lighting decisions have been made.

I'd also call the DP the cinematographer... but maybe I'm wrong in that... I don't know.

All I know is the DP is the guy who controls how effective a scene is. (in my opinion)

Thank you :)

Now could I have some more openions on the 3rd grab? Is it the softness that makes it look worse than the others?

It's that the others have a good combination of qualities... composition and sense of motion or foreboding. The third grab doesn't show the seperation of the subject through lighting, motion, or DOF (depth of field).

Don't go nuts and start trying to make every shot an artsy shot or else your production will be exhausting to watch... but if the third shot had a little more lighting on the subject to pop him off the background it would be more interesting. Okay that said, these are grabs not clips so maybe the scene that would be used in would work perfectly.

You can experiment with lighting in a lot of cheap ways. Even a white bounce card can do a lot if you have a window nearby.

By your grabs you already have skill... so don't get caught up in the advice of any dopes like me either... process all advice you get through your own metal filter and keep what you can use and discard what you can't.

I'll be looking forward to an entry from you in the next contest.

The last grab is my favourite, because it actually shows you are thinking about what you are doing and what you are thinking is good. The fact that you are 14 is excellent...

Do you want to direct? It was just you said you weren't very good at telling stories, and for directing that is essential...well for narrative drama anyway.

...HOWEVER... you appear to have a talent behind the camera. I would love to see some more of your stuff, because if you use you age to full advantage, it will get you ahead of the game.

One more thing, how did you afford a DVX at 14? However , you did, keep using it!

Well, it's really a super long story. But it started with my brother, (kinda.. smart guy, quit school at an age of 14 and stuff), he figured that to save our environmet, we needed to sell our car. My parents slowly started to agree, and we sold the car for 100.000NOK ($15772 USD). At the same time, I was on the look-out for dvx's around in the country, there are in fact quite alot of people selling them over here. So I got this offer from a professional music video producer on a DVX100E for 20.000NOK ($3145 USD), I know it sounds really expensive, but it's not, has something to do about our NOK being really high these days.

So I (with my parent's money of course...) bought it, and I've been shooting just about every day since then :)

So you made your parents sell their car and buy you a DVX...haha... now that's what I like to see!

If I didn't know better I'd think that was a NOK NOK joke.

What country are you in? I'm curious what NOK is? I know it's like VAT, but I'm wondering what it stands for.

I also applaud your efforts... and at the same time wonder how in the hell you talked your parents into the DVX for car trade?
