Hey guys... My first feature film, Vigilantes, is set to premiere on the 16th of February at the Crest Theatre in Sacramento... The story centers around homeless street kids, so I wanted the colors to be somewhat washed out... I hope I succeeded... Talk about scary! Anyway runtime is about 115 min. Shot with the DVX and the Anamorphic adapter.

Has anyone seen dvx footage straight from a dvd on the big screen? If so, how did it look?

Thanks guys,

SmithHouse

Hey guys... The only trailer I have is very rough and I did it a while back so I'll try to get a revised one put up in the next couple of days... The Theatre it's showing in seats 975 and we've sold about 400 presale tickets so far so it will be a awesome experience whether we fill it up or not... (keep your fingers crossed, Coffee)... This was shot for straight to dvd market (and it looks great on the tele), but we wanted to try and put something special together for the cast and crew... We're just using one of our Dvd's Joe for projecting, so I hope it turns out...

For a theater that size, you'll want a 10k ANSI projector or greater. Do you know what they have in there? I'm interested in processing equipment they might have in place as well. Try and run an after-hours test prior to the screening if you can.

Hey Overland... Can you give me some specific questions to ask about in terms of equipment. I'm going down to the theatre later this week...

Any DVXers in the Sacramento Area?

I wrote, directed, edited, co-produced, and did some of the music for the film, so I think I can get you in free (got to ask my wife though ha ha)... Seriously though, I would love to have some of you guys as my guest... I didn't know ONE single thing about filmmaking until I hooked up with you DVXers back when I started this project.

Digital projection is all over the map right now - you could be in a 2k 18,000 ANSI Christie Digital venue or a place equipped with a 5000 lumen XGA Proxima used for preshow advertising. Find out in advance!

Also, do they have processing equipment? Doubler, quadrupler D/A converters and so on. If they haven't told you already, I'd assume it is a simple single-system playback (e.g., your NTSC DVD will work fine).

It isn't always realistic, but it would be good to have a look at the projection in advance - perhaps burn some NTSC bars as a separate chapter on your disk to check the coloremetry in advance.

While some mid-range projectors (like the Sanyo-Proxima, Barco and NEC) have test patterns built-in, it is unlikely that Skippy, the 17 year old concession guy / projectionist will be able to find them, much less tweak the projector once he has.

Here are the technical specs for the Crest Theatre: http://www.thecrest.com/rental_info/theatre_film_spec.cfm

I know they do both film and digital projection, but I don't know enough about the equipment to know what these specs mean in terms of the questions you are asking Overland, hopefully it will make sense to you :)

Smithhouse - I live in Winters (about 30 minutes west of Sacramento, between Davis and Vacaville) and I grew up in So. Sac. and Elk Grove. I'd love to hook up with you sometime, maybe work a project together or something. I am a DVXUser.com'er, but not yet a DVXer (working on that) :)

Those grabs look really good...I'd love to see some clips or a trailer.

Peace,
Larry

Thanks Larry - I don't see any digital specification on there. If this is a filmout presentation, you'll be in good shape. The good news is that it is a Local 50 IA house, which means that they might have a HOD digital projectionist hired in for your showing.

Perhaps email the management to find out the particulars on how it will all work.

Good luck, wish I could be there!

Yea, I thought I didn't see any digital projection equipment listed. But on the pricing page it makes a comment that both film and digital projection are available. Also, I know that the Sacramento Film Festival meets there at the Crest and they accept both film and digital media.

Smithhouse - You might be able to contact someone from the Festival (http://www.sacramentofilmfestival.com/) to get more information on projecting at the Crest.

Peace,
Larry

Grab of the guy with the M92FS was too grainy - should've kept lighting in mind because it looks like you had to use max gain.

I'm going to be contacting the theatre on Wednesday to get some info on the projection equip. For those of you who are interested, I'll keep you posted...

Larry, I would love to hook up man. Let's keep in touch. I used to do pest control and Winters was part of my route... I hope you can make it to the premiere, we're going to have a preshow concert too featuring some of the bands that has their music in the film. It's going to be a fun night.

LeSeulGiraffe - No gain added in any of the footage. Some scenes are definitely shot better than others. When I first started this project I didn't know how to use a camera, knew nothing about lighting, editing, sound etc... This was the first thing that I have ever shot with a camera and am very pleased with how things turned out overall... I've chalked this whole project up to a learning experience and am anxious to get on with the next project.

I have two other feature films waiting to be shot and honestly have no intention of doing the camera work... I've seen some unbelievable footage shot by some of you dvxers and would love to enlist one of you guys for my next project.

Cheers,

SmithHouse

Hey Overland...

The Crest has a Sankyo 3500 lumen projector... how is that in terms of quality I can expect from my dvd?

Thanks, e

SmithHouse

I seen the dvx on the big screen it looks good, also I believe I seen your trailer you posted it awhile ago If I'm not mistaking.

Congrads on your first feature.

Thanks guys... This whole project was a total learning experience, and It's undoubtably a worthy effort... I'm starting preproduction on my next feature film in March so I'm hoping to hook up with some local skilled dvxers to shoot it... I had my hand in everything for the Vigilantes movie, but I want to stick with writing and directing... We're doing a final mix on the audio this weekend, then the movie is good to go... Then I'll work on getting my revised trailer back on line.

I know two Dvxers who are coming to the premiere... If you're in the area, and you want to come check it out on the 16th at the Crest Theatre in Sacramento... Just let me know, you can be my guest...

Happy Shooting,

SmithHouse
