Grab of a Sunset in Wilmington, NC

Shot about 25 minutes of a sunset at Figure Eight island in NC about 2 weekends ago. White balanced using the "Warm Cards" and just let it run. Darks look a little to dark (suggestions?) but overall I think it looks pretty good. By the way, I ran the footage through DVFilm Maker and it looks INCREDIBLE although this shot hasn't been processed.

So Guys, can you shoot the sun? Are you not risking a ccd burn up! I ruined a still camera (Coolpix 5400) shooting timelapse and would not like to do the same with the dvx! I love these shots but r they safe?

Re: Grab of a Sunset in Wilmington, NC

I shoot the SUNSETS/SUNRISE from time to time but never sit there and FOCUS on it if you know what I mean...

Lately I have been using Grads.

What do you mean it hasn't been "processed"? You mean you haven't done any post-adjustments?

This has no post shooting enhancements whatsoever. Straight out of the Final Cut Pro timeline.
I'm assuming thats a compliment! lol

Re: Grab of a Sunset in Wilmington, NC

i almost moved from San Diego to Wilmington, NC a few years ago. for a number of reasons.

1) its beautiful (as can be seen by your gorgeous screen cap)
2) like Contact Therapy mentioned... DAWSONS CREEK. ****in, my favorite television show ever. (im sure it helps i was same age as the main character and we were both overly analytical, aspiring filmmakers) =P
3) plus wilmington is the 3rd largest film industry in the US... only behind LA and NY.

youre grab makes me regret staying here in SD... for a stupid girl. a girl who broke my heart not too long after i had decided not to move. =/

Re: Grab of a Sunset in Wilmington, NC

Dawsons Creek was actually shot in Wilmington as was Matlock, blah, blah. As a matter of fact if I was to pan the camera left, the house where they shot alot of exteriors for the film "Sleeping with the Enemy" is about 50 feet to my left. Several years ago I was out walkin one morning on the island and I see this horde of people jogging, one guy out front with several behind and two black suv's pickin up the rear comin at me, which is strange since this is a private island and is usually VERY quiet. As I get closer I'm thinkin "what the hell is this?" I get about 20 yards away as there comin at me and I realize its Al Gore and his posse of secret service agents! So I say "Mornin!" and he says "Mornin" and his agents just eyeball me as if to say "we will pop a cap in your ass buddy, just keep on walkin"
Was kinda cool though. Did run into Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith down there to, but without all the makeup and primpin you hardly recognise them!

Re: Grab of a Sunset in Wilmington, NC

You must have some money if you were on Figure Eight Island. I work over there all the time. John Mack the ex CEO of Morgan Stanley Dean Witter has the biggest house I have ever seen on that island.

Re: Grab of a Sunset in Wilmington, NC

Wilmington is an awesome place I lived there for a couple of years back in 87
It was when they were shooting "Silver Bullet"

Oh and about shooting the sun....... I have been working on a corporate video for Palm Harbor Homes. I shot a tour of the manufacturing plant down in PHX, AZ where in they welded the footings on the Chassis.
If you have been around welding before.... it was pretty bright...
It turned out beautiful... Didn’t hurt the camera at all.

Re: Grab of a Sunset in Wilmington, NC

I actually don't own property on the island (If I did I'd be over on the CineAlta site!) My aunt actually has a house on the island that she graciously allows us to use. I know the Mack house and it's just insanely huge.

Re: Grab of a Sunset in Wilmington, NC

Dprendergast,

Your Al Gore story reminds me of a time when I walked right past Hillary Clinton at the Buffalo NY airport. I was looking back at my "drag-a-long" luggage behind me and looked up to find Hillary less than 10 feet in front of me. My aim put me between her and her security, but I guess they realized that I didn't see that it was her and they just let me pass right on between them.

I wasn't sure that what I'd seen was in fact what I'd seen...until I looked over at the gate and the entire crowd was gawking at the figure I'd just passed!! hehe

Nice shot though.

Is that noise in the dark areas from the camera or from the jpeg compression? I'm on a crusade to minimize camera noise...

Re: Grab of a Sunset in Wilmington, NC

Funny story regarding Al Gore:

The "environmentalist" Al Gore called my fathers company to have his water regulators removed from his shower heads (yes it's illegal, but he was the vice president at the time so what are you going to do). So a worker is heading over there to "help him" and pulls up to the entrance and sees the guard at the checkpoint who he knows. Figure Eight has guards 24 hours and being the guy worked there often he knew him really well. He pulls up and stops and the guard walks to the truck and talks to him. At the end, the guard asks him to state his business on the island for the log. Since he is a buddy of his and they were the only ones around he joking said " I have come here to shoot the Vice President." Within two seconds the secret service jump out of the bushes and pull him out of the car. They search his car and he has a gun under the seat of his truck (he works in really bad areas) and they arrest him. He is now banned from the island forever and it's a on going joke for the office. If you haven't already figured this out, the worker isn't the brightest man in the world.
