GOT MY FIRST JOB!  HOW DO I CHARGE?

Re: GOT MY FIRST JOB!  HOW DO I CHARGE?

Re: GOT MY FIRST JOB!  HOW DO I CHARGE?

I would definitely charge for shooting, editing and putting the whole thing together ( $$$ based on what you feel you worth and your experience ).

You can also make a deal which could include and amount for the work and a percentage of every copy being sold, if you really think your friend can sell a lot.

But remember you don't have to do it for peanuts

Re: GOT MY FIRST JOB!  HOW DO I CHARGE?

Re: GOT MY FIRST JOB!  HOW DO I CHARGE?

I did two short training films for the company I work for. One was 13 minutes and the other was 15 minutes long. I wrote, narrated, shot and edited both. My charge to them was $100 a minute for each of the finished videos. ($1300 and $1500)

I work a 7 day on / 7 day off work schedule, so I did all the work on my time off. Funny, if I work for my company on my days off doing what I normally do, I make $400 a day. I put in a solid 3 weeks of work on the videos, and edited for at least 90 plus hours. It seemed I gave them a very low price after it was all over with. Never again. I'm going to have to figure out a new pricing scale. :P

$40 an hour to shoot seems low to me. I would charge close to $100 an hour depending on how elaborate the shoot is.

I suppose it needs to be mentioned again... this is his first real gig. You don't just buy a DVX and say my rate is $100/hr. (even with no *professional* experience).

If so, where is this land of milk and honey?

Too True.

Most people would do this as a "costs" shoot, "most" meaning "beginner".

A way to build a reel.

Re: GOT MY FIRST JOB!  HOW DO I CHARGE?

Thanks to everyone for their comments. I think I am gong to settle on the 25 bucks an hour rate. He's a friend, and I am pretty inexperienced.

Re: GOT MY FIRST JOB!  HOW DO I CHARGE?

Re: GOT MY FIRST JOB!  HOW DO I CHARGE?

A "beginner" with "no" experience......is worth $25 an hour?

LOL....real loud.

Re: GOT MY FIRST JOB!  HOW DO I CHARGE?

Don't Laugh TOO loud, I might hear it!!! I am a beginner, but I do have "some" (although limited) experience.

First of all, I know what the new videos in this genre are doing, and aside from the helicopter shots, am not too scared that I can't do it at least near as good. I play in a band and have connections in the industry involving pro riders and big bands that are a plus to have for such a video.

I'm not going to be setting up lights, I won't be writing scripts, I won't need much more than Berry's book (which I've already acquired and learned alot from) to teach me how to set up my camera for what I'm doing.

Also, I already showed him something I edited and he really, really liked it. It wasn't really anything, but there isn't a dire need for fantastically edited scenes in the type of movie I am doing. Hasn't anyone seen a Crusty Demons of Dirt video?

Thanks for the advice though. You really think that's too much?

"I won't need much more than Berry's book (which I've already acquired and learned alot from) to teach me how to set up my camera for what I'm doing"..........

Read what to wrote.......and you still think you're worth $25 per hour?

You've got ambition, which is a real plus......but......you might want to consider it "on the job training", do a good job, you've got references.......

But $25 an hour?.....no.

Re: GOT MY FIRST JOB!  HOW DO I CHARGE?

Re: GOT MY FIRST JOB!  HOW DO I CHARGE?

$25/hr seems like a FORTUNE. I am the highest paid teacher at our college and I make a whopping $5/hr (10 hrs/week) Do the math. How about you do it for $26/hr and send me the extra $1? ...Now if I can only get 50 other people to do the same.

I smell a chain-letter.

Re: GOT MY FIRST JOB!  HOW DO I CHARGE?

I think that comment is totally valid. If you read my comment: "Hasn't anyone seen a crusty demons of dirt video?", then maybe you would know what I was talking about. I'm not talking like I am a technical guru here, but I think Barry's guide gives most people a relatively good understanding as to what this camera can do in the right hands. Also I think it gives a very good understanding as to how to set up your camera for the basic-style shoot I will be doing.

One thing you are right about though. I read my post again...........I think I'll charge $30 per hour.

Re: GOT MY FIRST JOB!  HOW DO I CHARGE?

PK- You're in Thailand right? No offense, but I still live in the USofA! Maybe you should move back and enjoy some higher wages!

So I don't get it. Some people say charge $40-$100 an hour. Some people say do it for free. Some people say doing it for $40 an hour IS FREE! Some people have said I'm degrading the industry if I do it for too cheap etc. etc.

So I spend at least 100 hours on it, $2500 seems too much? Don't get me wrong, Pookie, if that REALLY is too much, then I don't want to charge it. I just don't want to give out a $6,000 product for $500 bucks. Although the shooting isn't technical, it is time consuming and I have to be very versatile.

Re: GOT MY FIRST JOB!  HOW DO I CHARGE?

"This project will be ongoing for the next couple of months and could easily end up being over 100-200 hours of work" @  $25 - $30 per hour.

For a beginner, my, my......

Even assuming your friend is willing to pay $2500 to $6000, you'd better be "very, very" good.... :-/

I think this one falls under "the arrogance of youth"........

Re: GOT MY FIRST JOB!  HOW DO I CHARGE?

Re: GOT MY FIRST JOB!  HOW DO I CHARGE?

another thing is the 200 hours of work thjing.

I MIGHT be wrong, but theres almost no way u'll be working for 200 hours on this 1 hour ad. U need to really be aware of how much time ur actually working. Just becuase u devote tuesday to work doesnt mean u get paid for 10 hours or however much, u dont get paid for breaks or eating or rnning errands that day. I think once u start, if u really keep track of how many hours ur actually working, u'll be finished much sooner.

Then again, maybe im wrong, ive never worked on somethuing with a TRT of more than a few minutes. oh well, stick with what these pros tel ya

Re: GOT MY FIRST JOB!  HOW DO I CHARGE?

Or it falls under the "underestimation and general lack of knowledge pertaining to the project being discussed".

What kind of shoot do you think I'll be doing? Just wondering. If you look back on your posts, you really haven't even told me what you think I should do. Unless you've been hinting this whole time that I should do it for a flat rate of nothing.

Re: GOT MY FIRST JOB!  HOW DO I CHARGE?

Re: GOT MY FIRST JOB!  HOW DO I CHARGE?

i think whats going on here is that it really depends on ur skill level, and we dont know what that is and its defficult for u to describe for us.

If u think ur perfectly confident to do a prfessional job, do the $40/hour best bud price and get that sucker in your portfolio, if ur not sure how well it will turn out, maybe do it for the price of any equipment rentals and meals while ur there. Expectations are low and now one feels bad if it doesnt exactly turn out like everyone hoped.

I think thats kinda what everyones getting at....   I think

Re: GOT MY FIRST JOB!  HOW DO I CHARGE?

Cheese- I know that it will take at least 100 hours of real work. This meaning shooting and editing. That's pretty much what I plan on charging for. About 100 hours.

On top of that is the driving to locations sometimes up to 3-6 hours away, sometimes 5 minutes away. Also there will be: lining up licensing for music, lining up licensing for riders, lining up/renting "B" cameras and operators (although very few), etc. etc. There will also be some preperation for interviews, and limited storyboarding. Still, not alot of technical camera work needed.

Also this job entails getting the riders/people caught on tape drunk, or doing some crazy/funny stuff that will just be entertaining to the kinds of people who frolic in this type of lifestyle. So I have to kind of be ready and hang out with these guys quite a bit. Which isn't SOOO bad because alot of them are friends.

Re: GOT MY FIRST JOB!  HOW DO I CHARGE?

Re: GOT MY FIRST JOB!  HOW DO I CHARGE?

Slimothy - No offense taken. My comment was a joke. A poor one, but a joke none the less. Goods and services are real cheap over here, so it all balances out. I gave up a high paying job before coming here, so I understand the need for $$. You have to charge what you need to be satisified, cover expenses, and survive.

You are getting conflicting amounts of what to charge. Because he's a good friend I would make sure you give him the best price possible and not be greedy. I would feel odd charging a friend $30/hr because I don't think they know what the average rate is. Maybe if you show him. Price around your area and give him a huge discount.

The average person doesn't consider videgraphers/editors/designers as worthy of lawyers rates. Everyone knows they're going to pay lawyers and therapists alot of money per hour. Has your friend ever had a video made before? Is he aware of the cost involved? Show him comparisons.

I wouldn't do it for free. But definitely cover your expenses and add a little so you can buy yourself something nice, as a bonus for your first paid gig.

Good luck!

Re: GOT MY FIRST JOB!  HOW DO I CHARGE?

yeah ur probably right, now that i bother to think about it instead of post. 100 hours isnt THAT much when u consider how ambitious this sounds lol Good luck dude

[glow=red,2,300]The question is:[/glow]

What makes you worth $25-$30 per hour?

And "I think I am worth it....it's the going rate....I won't work for free....some guy's on DVXUser say so", aren't an answer.
