i'm sorry if this is the wrong section, but given my circumstances i don't know whats a more appropriate forum to post it in.

i don't own Premiere anymore.. basically my cd was ruined and i can't reinstall it anymore and i don't have the money to shell out. however, i have After Effects so i'm hoping i can use that to edit my documentary.

i have about 7 hours of footage shot with my dvx100a in 24p. i needed to capture it, and i heard of VirtualDub, so i downloaded it along with the Panasonic DV codec, and began capturing. however, i'm really not sure what to do now... it captured everything uncompressed (one hour came to about 12 gigs) but what now? i can't tell if the footage is in 24p now, or if i have to use another program to remove the pulldown, or what.

also, the final medium this will be on is DVD. given my circumstances, which is:

- having VirtualDub & the panasonic DV codec
- having Adobe After Effects

can anyone give me some step-by-step insight in capturing everything *properly*, doing what i have to in terms of pulldown messing, importing it into After Effects properly, and then having it be able to be viewed on DVD in 24p properly? i'm really lost in all of this!

I'm not positive on this but when you import your footage into after effects, you can right click on the files and select *interpret footage*, then select *main* then in that menu it gives you the option of removing the pulldown so you'll be at 24 frames. I'm sure someone else will chime in with a much better description of what to do.
I'm very proud of you, a lot of people would get Limewire and download Vegas 6 or Premiere Pro 1.5, but you're doing it the honest way. Good stuff, keep trucking.

As noted you can remove pulldown in AE but if it's 24p (not 24pa) you don't have to. Because pure 24 is smaller fiel size (less frames) you may get better quality on the DVD if you have a lot of footage to cram in. Liekwise if you plan to go to film then you'll want to remove pulldown.

Unfortunately AE isn't an editor. i think you'll find it pretty painful, especially if you have 7 hours of footage. Most AE users deal with items less than a minute in length.
Ripple edits, etc don't really exist in AE.
Doesn't microsoft have a movie editor similar to iMovie? (I'm on a Mac).
Are there any simple freeware editors available for the PC?

well, i went out on a limb and bought Sony Vegas for a really great value (IMO) after reading some nice reviews on it. i suppose that will help consolidate my capturing & editing into one software package.

however, i'm curious - do i need to remove the pulldown now in Vegas? it has 24p full support, so assuming i don't remove the pulldown when editing, what does that mean? the footage wont look perfect on my computer, but once its burned to dvd, it will? i'm really new to this whole DVD game.. i always thought removing the 3:2 pulldown was necessary.
