Got a Poorman's solution to flags and silks?

Anyone know if there's a way to make flags and silks? Do they sell silk/half/full/double flag material which someone can sew on a frame or something? It would be nice to not have to pay the full price of these items when its clearly just some specific fabric attached to a metal frame.

Flags are easy -- black foam core.

For silks, the frame is the hard part. You could go no-budget with a thin bedsheet and get somewhere in the ballpark...

If I were you, I'd just go to a fabric store and start looking around at different types of fabric. I'm sure you'll find something there that would work. It would make for a nice DIY project.

You beat me, Barry.:(

You could also get net material at a fabric store. I believe it's called black organza and it's used to make veils. I could be wrong, because I'm not a great fabric store mind.

This is almost embarassing... I've been lurking on the board for years, and THIS is the thread I decide to jump into as my first contribution to the board.

You may also want to look into a material called "tulle". Its a very light mesh material that you can use as a silk. Almost any fabric or craft store should carry it. Its relatively cheap and sold on a spool. It comes in all different colors, but I'd stick with black if possible. Layering the material will help you achieve the desired effect.

Black net will drop light levels but keep the light pretty hard. White net is kinda sweet; opens up the shadows, but the light still feels hard & directional, just takes the edge off. Everyone seems to automatically go with solid white silks; net can be really sweet without giving you that "flat", scrimmed look. (Damn it, just gave away one of my secrets!)
