FS5: Gopro with FS5 or FS7?

I was wondering if any of you guys are mounting a Gopro (or other actioncam brand) on top of your FS5/7's and shooting on both so you can get at least a couple of shots out of one camera person/angle?

I've been thinking of doing this for a wedding I'll be shooting. But right now I only have a 1080 res Gopro (Hero+). So I was wondering if it's worth stepping up to the Hero 5 and shooting this set up in 4K, thus having extra res to punch in in Post (if outputting to 1080/720) as well as cropping down to lose the fish eye edges.

But I've got some questions that hopefully someone here can answer. Firstly how well will the Gopro (4 or 5) grade with an FS5 or 7, either with both in Rec709 or Slog and Gopro flat profile? Secondly how good is the Gopro 4/5 in low light? Finally are there any other gotchas to this sort of filming scenario?

Go heros 3 and four - for 1080 not really aware of a difference apart from one has the very handy screen.

Ive used it atop the FS7 but cant remember a shot where that made the cut

overall for a 'coporate grade' I dont care what camera.. get the shot.

here you will see the gopro intercut with the FS7 in the first few shots

You spoiled it by answering. Good thing I made my guess before reading your comment. I thought the only GoPro was 3 seconds in, the shot over the water of girl in red on the blue surfboard.

Ive used the FS7 and Go Hero 4 pro together quite a bit . Never really found they grade to well together I shoot with the go pro flat profile and slog 3 on the fs7.
Shooting in 4k burns though batteries like crazy on the go pro so you need a ton of extras for a day. It is decent in low light not great. I find the greatest use is getting them into odd angles and mounting options then when you cut to it it is not totally unexpected that it could be a different camera profile.

lots of both in this project:

Good Luck!

Thanks Chris. Nice video. Yes I can see where you go from FS7 to Gopro, but only because I'm looking out for it and can verify the change via DOF and colour. As you say the change in shot size/perspective diverts the attention otherwise.

But have you tried shooting and grading both in rec709? I think it's Alister or Doug who make a good argument for the extra data (for grading) spread across only 6-7 stops instead of 14.

They make a good but flawed argument, if you are delivering 8bit then the most tones you can deliver is 256

Now say you capture in 10bit 1064 tones and your scene dynamic range is only using 7 of the 12 stops you 'can capture' then your 7 stops are probably spread over 500-600 tones.. so you have enough tones to make wonderful 8bit 256 tone in the grade.. and you get a couple of stops of true gradable latitude at each end of the file.

So you get a 50% over sample which is theoretically not as good as the 100% oversample you get with 709 in camera but it is good enough and the pratcical advantage of latitute bought outweights the theoretical advantage unless you are in a highly controlled studio environment.

..and the gopro defo looks like poop until you go into protune colour (or whatever it is called)

Thanks,

I never shoot in rec 709 just my preference. I've just used SLog3 from day one with the camera and gotten used to the workflow from shooting to post . I should experiment more but I don't :)

Also when you do go to grade the go pro footage it falls apart so quickly. but still a handy little camera.
