GOPRO hero 4 - will 60Mbps be high enough for 4K shooting???

Just wondering whether the 60 Mbps bit rate for 4K would be a high enough bit rate given that everything is in focus? Although From what I can see of the GOPRO hero 4 trailer, the 4K quality does look fantastic.

i would have thought though that 4K would require at least 100Mbps. or does the GOPRO use some sort of algorithm that allows 4K to have great results at 60Mbps?

Philip Bloom is complaining about some issues with the codec when he is flying the GoPro between branches and leaves. With slower, more panoramic shots you hopefully won't have such a problem.

Again, I will say that this camera is the size of a box of matches and most of it is taken up with a battery. I've shot many clips on the Hero 3 at 2.7k that runs at 35mbps and it looks great considering what the footage was acquired with...

Well, shooting 4k should give you great 1080p. I just got mine. Charging it up and will see how it Goes Pros...

Nice.

Which Phantom do you own? Does it have the Zenmuse gimbal?

For that matter, which Phantom do you have, Noel? I love the stuff you posted recently.

Here is just testing the GP4 on the Dji Phantom 2. I did not use my ND filter on this. Just set the camera to 4K 30p pro tune AWB. The rolling shutter is SOOOOO much better. Clip is 4K downloadable.

i also picked one up at best buy this morning. i can't find anyone that has the batteries in stock though. even go pro.com lists them as "coming soon".

i ordered 2 extra batteries @ the best buy store and the sales guy looked it up and said that the new batteries showed that i would receive them between oct 9-16.

a bit frustrating that they release a new camera but you can't get batteries?

looking good dustylens!

Was there some de-sharpening done to the image (in camera or later)? Maybe it's just me, but after downloading the file, I find that the image doesn't look as sharp as I would expect 4K to look. For example 4K from the GH4 looks super sharp, probably too much so. But here the 4K image looks a little soft, but maybe that was the intention (for it not too look too sharp). Thank you for sharing.

I set the sharpness to minimum. Plus, I undistorted the lens with a plug-in which hits the edges. I just shot some other tests with the GP in Protune, native WB, and flat and the images look pretty darn solid. Let's just say I am pretty happy to get nice looking drone shots that out do the Hero 3. The 4k to 1080 is very impressive.

Thanks very much for clarifying that Dustylense. I was just about to order one myself, but the softness made me hesitate for a second. Now I'm sold. I also set the softness to minimum on the GH4. I can't wait to play with these 4K images in a 1080p timeline. That should look great as you said. Thanks, :)

Just remember that this is a camera that is the size of a matchbox in which the battery takes up most of the space. Once that sinks into your mind you quickly see how powerful this little device is. If people want to complain about the GP4 and what it does not do compared with other cameras???? I say "Get the F out of this business!" Seriously. What GoPro has done is quite amazing when you think about what the camera actually is and is not.....

EDIT:

Lets just say that when I put the 4k footage into a 1080 TL and use Protune, Native WB, and flat color, even at the lowest sharpness setting the footage looks as sharp as any of my C100 footage. If not sharper.

Dusty, I assume you did a quick grade of some sort on the flat Protune- a quick curve or something?

Looks great... especially for a flying matchbox!
