Google +

No. I do find it a bit amusing that google is launching a social media site the same month Myspace gets sold for a fraction of what they bought it for due to how terrible it's doing. They laid off half their staff toward the end of last year / beginning of this year, and now they've just about done it again. This has "terrible idea" written all over it.

But I know nothing about marketing, so I'll leave that to the pros.

Google temporarily shut down invites since too many people are currently on their pilot program with Plus. Give it time, it'll roll out. I'm hearing good things. Apparently it bridges the gap between over sharing on Facebook and undersharing on twitter with their new Circles feature. And the Hangouts video conference is getting good feedback. I'm not on it yet. But like I said, that's anecdotal.

Myspace was dead since the inception of facebook. It's data was all over the place, it wasn't innovating, it was clunky and kinda creepy. Kinda like Facebook now. But facebook was exclusive, shiny, and cool. Thus the move. Myspace didn't know what to do to compete. Eventually they shifted to music and television. And it just became an ad platform. It was picked up for 580 mil because at that time, it was still awesome. Now it's DOA and it needs a total reboot and a new team. That's why it sold for a measly 35mil. There was no value anymore. No userbase, terribly rebranding "My_____" and no strategic direction.

The social network isn't dying, my_____ was broken. Now Justin Timberlake is taking on his role from Social Network and turning My_____ into something useful. It'll be centered around music. Think reverbnation, just better.

So it's not a marketing thing. It's life and death of a product. Friendster died when Myspace came along. Myspace died when Facebook came along. And as soon as someone can do facebook better than facebook, facebook will go the way of my_____.

I don't know if google is the competition for Facebook yet. I don't know if it's supposed to be.

Anything that breaks a monopoly is a good thing, we need balanced playing fields.

At this point in time Google is a shining light by buying vp8 and giving it away as open source WebM, by creating the Android umbrella so other phones
can compete against iOS and now they are trying to level the social arena?

Go Google !

I would say that youtube alone is a monopoly to the same level of facebook. That's just one part of Google.

It's true they are google are big but that does not make them a monopoly. Very few of their departments are monopolies
as each competes with other companies in the same area.
eg
gmail with yahoo and others
shopping with amazon and others
youtube with vimeo, dailymotion and others
etc

now facebook is a monopoly

I might join just to see how long it takes them to kick me out. Consider me a Beta tester.

Used to have a FB account, but deleted it pretty quickly, after I did not benefit from getting informed, that my "friends" where building a barn in some virtual village or other "interesting" facts.
The Google concept, with the circles and other ideas they had makes much more sense to me. Since I have a Google phone (Nexus S) that plays great with everything from Google, I gonna give it a test ride.

Invitations anyone?

Frank
