Good way to mask the LCD for 2.4 aspect ratio framing?

I'm thinking about shooting my next short in a 2.4 aspect ratio and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on a quick and easy way to mask the LCD of the 5D in order to properly frame the shot.

I was thinking of just placing some black tape over it, but I'm not quite sure how to get the alignment and proportions just right (i.e I want the viewable area to actually be a 2.4 ratio). It doesn't have to be perfect because I can always readjust in post with the extra area that will be in the 16X9 frame, but it's always better to be as close as possible.

Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks all!

If you can find colored scotch tape, that works great. It allows you to see the edges, but also to see through to see if anything is about to bump into frame, and also to read onscreen info.

It also works great on external monitors...

Great idea to make a file for the camera to display. If that's not an option, a quick measurement and bit of math will get you there.

Whether I'm using the camera LCD or an external monitor, chart tape is the best to lay out physical guides. It's thin enough to let you see outside the frame and fight the boom out of the shot. :)

I use yellow, it also comes in handy for many other things in camera department.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I'm going to try creating a file in Photoshop and viewing that on the camera.

Here is my technique ...

1. video something and take it to your editor but don't delete the clip from your camera!

2. Change the canvas on the timeline to your desired aspect ratio and reframe the clip

3. compare the LCD on the camera to your new crop on the computer ... you can now see where to put the tape on the back of your camera
