As far as I know, you'll need the express card to use the Matrox. I have mine set up on my desktop editing computer,so I'm not an expert when it comes to laptops, but I had to install a PCIE card made for the Matrox when I hooked mine up. I use the Matrox mostly for my client monitor and the HDMI out looks great. Some people claim it slows down their editing software, but I use it with my Avid Media Composer 6 and have no problems.
