Good Tutorials To Explain Timeline

I'm coming from FCP where I could gank the footage anywhere I wanted on the timeline - I'd copy and paste and pull and shift. Obviously I went into Avid knowing that it works differently, but I'm wanting to get up to speed as quickly as possible - I think I've exhausted the "create a test project and just push buttons under different circumstances and see what happens" way of learning...anything good out there for this...?

Thanks,
Mark.

Well, it appears I spoke too soon, I'm feeling pretty confident with the timeline - now my biggest concern is archiving media and media management...I'm a little concerned that the Avid wants to put all my media for all my projects into one giant folder on my drive. And then when I consolidate the media I can relink it to another drive...but well, what would I do if say my media was too large for one drive? I'm sure it's addressed...and I'm just starting out...but I find it odd that I can't just right-click on the off line file in the timeline and relink it like in final cut...I've tried various tests this evening moving the media around, and there is no way (it appears) for me to tell the avid that an offline segment in a sequence could be the same video on another drive - it wants the original or the backed up original avid database....I guess that keeps it simple, but I worry if my original and backups are destroyed that I can't easily tell the Avid no, no...use the edit points I gave you, but instead of looking for your silly database use these MXF P2 Files that I tell you...gah...Oh well, I'm getting over that learning curve I suppose.....

Mark?

Best of luck with your transition. I think you will be pleased with your choice to learn Avid. It really pays to know both editors in todays market.

I am curious what caused you to switch?

I wanted a job - :) No seriously, I went in for a job at HBO and could have easily have made the cuts (promo work) but everything was on the Avid. So I started looking into it and it really does look like the better editor (please don't anyone flame me!) especially considering I shoot P2 which has native MXF files. I'm currently a little frustrated trying to figure out where all my media files are being stored and how to manipulate them etc. but I'm sure in time I'll cut on it just as fast as I did in FCP - and I've already found so many things on the Avid that are fixed that drove me nuts in FCP - I LOVE segment mode!

all of your media files can be found in your OMFI folder(s). Ideally you'll have designated drives for this.
You will find you have doubled your job opportunities. And likewise, every avid editor (at least if freelence) should know FCP now. There are just too many gigs to miss out on if ya limit your knowledge base.
