I got me a Shotgun mic RODE NTG-2 back in december and the battery compartment wouldn't unscrew. Don't ask why I didnt' ship it back, very long story, anywho I completely forgot it was phantom powered. Tested it a few weeks ago on a shoot with someone's recorder and IT WORKED!

Now what I need is what is a good recorder that I can get for my NTG-2 ?

I was looking into the Zoom H4 but decided to what you guys think since there's more out there than just the H4.

"Good recorder" covers a very wide spectrum. Good for what uses?

FYI - Rode has an outstanding warranty on their products. Drop 'em an email and arrange to have your mic repaired.

What's your budget?

Personally, I use the Tascam HD-P2 & i'm very pleased. It has decent preamps. I use it with the NTG-2 as well & I get great sound.

The best one I have tested is the Fostex FR2LE. The Zoom gives you some extra mics to play around with.

ahh the HD-P2. That's exactly what it was tested on when I got to see if the phantom worked! I might go for that one. But I'm still going to look around and do some research on each.

Yes the HD-P2 is a nice littler recorder, and if your lucky, you can get them at a really good price.

Checked out your screen grabs from "Medal of Merit", looked real good (were they DVX footage grabs)?

Good luck with that project by the way!

The HD-P2 is the best choice for low cost recorders but the pre amps are not good enough for straight mic input. The recorder is good if you intend to use a mixer and then go line out and into the recorder. None of the low cost recorder pres are up to pro level, they make an annoying and unaceptable hiss. See Oade Brothers for new upgraded units. You get a lot more recorder for a little bit more money and a ton of sonic difference. Make sure you listen to the samples, they're accurate.

Have to disagree with you on that one. Been testing the heck out of it these last few weeks & there is no hiss unless I have it all the way up, (and even then, no hiss, just records the backround sounds louder). Gives a very nice sound & clean audio without a mixer.

With a mixer I'm sure it would be even better, but without, there is no problem using just the HDP2.

Who knows, maybe I got one previously modified, don't know, but this thing is fantastic!

At the top of the tree are the NAGRA VI, Sound Devices 788-T and Aaton Cantar - all well over £4,000 each.

The step down is the Sound Devices 744T and then down to the Sound Devices 702, 722 and the new NAGRA LB - the latter of which is about £1,600.

Down from this is the Fostex FR-2 (original version - and has timecode board option) and the Tascam HD-P2 - both these are excellent value for money pro/semi-pro recorders.

Just under this is the Fostex FR-2LE - which is about the cheapest recorder I would call "pro" - it's an excellent machine for the price (under £400).

I hope this helps.

You also might want to take a look at the Roland R44
four track portable recorder. It's compact. The pre-amps are good. The only real drawback is that it is a little bit battery hungry.

Exactly what I was going to suggest. Very nice recorder but as mentioned that thing will eat up some battery power.

Also quick question. Are you getting the recorder because you need it or you want it because it offers phantom power?

You can buy devices that will give your mic phantom power if that is what your concern is.
