Good pair of headphones for monitoring using H4N

Hello all just a quick question – I'm looking for a good pair of headphones to monitor audio from an H4N using a Rode NTG2. The cans I use right now aren't great and are lacking punch, not to mention they also have a faint hiss in the background. However, I have heard many people say the H4N causes a fair bit of background noise itself.

Anyway, my budget is around £50 but if someone told me its worth stretching a little more for a better pair of headphones I would definitely consider.

I will also be using them for editing on a computer and mixing. Incidentally I know little about audio, I'm a photographer and aspiring videographer so I am somewhat in your hands with this.

I have done a little bit of research but have heard such mixed opinions that it would be great to see if we could come up with a definitive answer for what to get in this price range for a video slr and audio set up.

Many thanks in advance!

Sony MDR-7506 or Sennheisser HD280pro. Either is probably closer to £70 or £80, but they're the defacto standards.

If you want to see that repeated about a billion times, do a search for 'headphones'.

In Europe the "industry standard" are the Sennheiser HD 25-1.

Several reasons - excellent isolation, low impedance and extremely high efficiency (120dB).

The HD 25-1 are 13dB more efficient than the Sony MDR7506 (106dB efficient) and have a lighter and stronger cable.

The cheaper HD 25SP II are still very efficient - 114dB.

Efficient headphones mean higher volume from the same level setting - or longer battery life at the same level.

I use the Sony MDR-V6. In fact,'ve used them since 1993. 5 bucks cheaper than the 7506, and an increased frequency range.
