Safer Seas IS an authorized Panasonic dealer!
Go to the Panasonic website and do the 'dealer locator' and Safer Seas comes up in the 94115 zip code.
They are near me, and I just went into their retail store the other day. Nothing shady going on there. They have a full studio full of gear set up that you can try out, and friendly staff.

I don't see anything wrong with Safer Seas, and they definitely have the USA version of the camera with Panasonic warranty.

Oh woops, my appologies. Perhaps they are authorized. I was confused, because I've heard MANY bad reviews about them.

I would go with EVS, but that's me.

EDIT: I've also heard good ones though... so it's really up in the air.

I've also heard about problems with Safer Seas. Definitely talk to Rush at EVS before you order. I'm sure he can hook you up with a good package and the DVX user discount.

Package deals are a mistake for two main reasons:

You get stuff you may not *need*

You are very likely to pay too much for some or all the goodies.

Talk to Rush @ EVS and he will tell what is overkill, over priced and give you alternate options. Save ya cash and treat you well. Two very groovy things. :)

Not all package deals are bad. I was offered the dvxa, Chrosziel mattebox, follow focus, filters, and some other stuff for 5K at my local dealer. Of course I was too stupid at the time to take it...

I did. But to my defense I have to say:

It was before I was aware of this site, so I didn't know any better.

I would have preferred to buy locally. I wanted to establish a long term relationship, and I'm lucky enough to have a pro lighting and grip rental/supply house nearby. But after the guy sent me that offer, I replied that I wanted only a camera, uv filter and maybe a tripod. I didn't hear back and I was getting very close to a scheduled shoot. The guy e-mailed me a month or so after I had bought on-line.

I'm still fighting my gray market crusade.
