Good/low end Analog to digital video converters

I'm looking for breakout box that would be good for my family to capture Composite from VCR or hi 8 and capture to uncompressed which can then be encoded as an mpeg2 for DVD.

There seem to be a lot of options out there. Can anyone recommend a good affordable one? Are there any that capture stright to an mpeg2 and has good results? Are there any that convert anolog to digital black levels on capture (I used to have one that does this but it was a professional breakout box)

I seem to remember some DVD to VHS combo players also had firewire on them. Ebay might be a good place to look. You'll still need to convert the DV to Mpeg-2 but the hard part will be out of the way.

Some cheap capture cards will capture straight to MPEG-2 but it may not be DVD compliant. I would look at newegg for some PCI cards that capture straight to Mpeg-2.
