Good lapel mic?

Hello everyone, I've received a ton of helpful advice from just reading this site.
I'll be shooting a short in a few weeks (with a dvx100b) and am asking what is a good lapel mic to achieve good sound from? Or will the shotgun mic do the trick? Thanks,

Buzzy,

There are several good posts about mics on the Home page of these forums in the section named AUDIO. It would be worth reading them. There is quite a lot to learn.

First of all, wired mics are always better than wireless unless you spend a great deal on the wireless. Second, what type of mic you choose depends on what kind of shots you are taking.

The Countryman B6 is one of the best wired lapel mics out there. It's small enough to be easily hidden and also can be worn with a clip. These are great for interview type shots: no handling noise, good sound quality, no assistant required for boom pole. Has to be aimed at talents mouth.

Shotgun mics can also be used if the talent is relatively stationary. Most shotgun mics have optimal pick up distance up to 7' or so, which is usually enough to get them out of the frame via boom pole. Boom pole can either be held by a stationary mount or with an assistant.

If you're doing action shots and you want live audio feed during them, a wireless lapel is the way to go.

And just so you know, there is no such thing a GOOD CHEAP mic. This is one case where you almost always get what you pay for. How much you spend is up to your buget, but remember that audio quality is HALF the impact for the audience.
