Good Interview with Ed Burns

Very relevant to microbudget indies, and a good reality check for those with unrealistic dreams of stardom.

Nice! Thanks for posting this. Doesn't look like he's saying anything other than the same thing most of us here say: we're not waiting around for someone to give us money to do what we want to do. It's also cool to see a guy like Ed Burns isn't saying that there's no chance of making money here, or breaking even. He's clearly pointing out avenues in which the no-budget no-namer can recoup their small investment. ITunes, for example.

Even THEN, his path isn't gospel, either. It's definitely great to read that someone with some success under their belt is still down to grind on a thin budget.

Yes, I smirk every time I see someone ask "will [insert camera name here] look good when I go to a film out?!!"

If you're on Netflix, that's pretty impressive. And even if you're in the bargain bin at Wal-Mart, that's pretty impressive too.

What I like about this is that it's one of THE hottest indie breakout stars from the 90s, and he's always had to work for it. It never got easy.

I’ve never had a moment where I could take my script, go out to LA and have a guy cut a check

Still need to check out the movies, but I have a lot of respect for him. He seems to really love the craft and wants to work in ways to maximize that love.

Now that I'm in post and really have to figure out the distribution thing, even walking into a Seven Eleven here I go "hmm... I could probably strike a deal with these guys to put a DVD or even Blu Rays on the counter."

Theatrical is a dream, the reality is that there are so many great avenues to recover money, using them all could mean its own sort of success in a way.

Yeah, that does sort of bite, indeed. It also depends on the sort of content he's producing. In all honesty, it doesn't exactly scream "dollars". But, that's okay because now it's pushing him to learn new tech and take advantage of other avenues. As long as he gets to keep doing what he loves, then it's all good.

Though I've always heard that, as far as acting ability goes, Burns is who you hire when a piece of wood is unavailable.

I'm following him on Twitter: it's kind of cute that he's just now experiencing DSLR video... like three years later.

Yeah living with Heather Graham would be a tough break. In the past my roommates have been fat dudes that don't know how to vacuum.

Can anyone find any footage of Newlyweds? I've googled it but couldn't come up with anything.

I feel like he has more credibility in the industry than he lets on. I love his work but it seems like he has a pretty negative attitude toward the whole process.

Like Kevin Smith, Ed Burns was someone who inspired me to think I could make movies myself. It is good to see him back to indie roots and his approach is extremely practicle. However, Like Kevin Smith, he's well known enough that his path is nearly assured to be successful because of his celebrity which puts him ahead of most of us. However, we can still do it the same way and eventually build our own brands.

Reel One Entertainment, Rainfall Films, etc.

After a few films, perhaps our brands will be more well known.
