i have a budget to spend 800 bucks...and was looking at some Sachtlers today at Birns and Sawyer -- of course it was the $1800 one and it was awesome. then i came across this model online and it seems fairly nice for the price. i like the different drag options Sachtler offers.
has anyone ever played with this certain model ( FSB 2 MD ) ??

or do you have any other ideas? i just can't spend almost 2 G's on a tripod when i'm about to drop 6 G's on a camera. by the way, i'm getting the HVX-170.
i currently have an old Bogen which gets me by, but i'm just ready to step it up a notch...and the Sachtlers felt great!!

thanks peeps!

Sachtlers are great! I haven't used the one you mention but I have a DV4 that is pretty close in price, I think it was $1200.

The kit you linked to looks pretty nice. Just make sure that your fully loaded camera meets the weight restrictions (fully loaded = matte box, external monitors, Mics/wireless recievers, teleprompter and anything else you think you might hang off of there in the future) Shouldn't be too hard with the 170

Just like Jock said watch the weight. If you are running an adapter with accessories you will exceed the 4.4lbs weight limit. but satchlers are nice. I wish I could afford one.

yeah i was worried about the weight. dammm. might have to get the FSB-6. just thought i could spend 800 and be alright. i guess i need to bite the bullet and spend the extra cabbage -- this will last me for years and years and years to come.
so i'm kind of naive about the following -- how do i know which legs will fit this head? does it depend on the Tripod bowl/Pedestal fitting size (75mm) ?? i hear the Sachtler legs are no good compared to Miller or Gitzo .

thanks!

so after a few days of contemplating between the Sachlter FSB 6 and the Cartoni Focus, i went with the Sachtler FSB-6 2 Stage System at AbelCine. the Cartoni can hold up to 22 lbs vs. Sachtler's 13 lbs, but i just like the feel of the head so much better -- plus it feels like a higher quality product.
more of my shooting is pretty basic -- no 35mm adapters or monitors hanging off my camera, usually just a mic or two. so the supported weight wasn't a huge dilemma.

I rented a Cartoni Focus a few times before I bought my Sachtler. Let's just say that I was not impressed and that my boss wanted to throw it out the window. The basic drill is that if you are coming from a POS like a Bogen, the Cartoni Focus will seem like a Porsche. If you come from a Sachtler, Miller or Vinten, the Cartoni Focus will seem like a Yugo so I guess it is somewhat a matter of perspective.

I used to own a Sachtler Video 20 II with my Betacam and I currently own a DV-6SB with my HPX-170. Sachtlers are pretty hard to beat. The only brand I like as much is O'Connor but they don't make any small, light heads.

You will be very happy with your Sachtler.

yeah, been using it for a few weeks -- love it! feel like i have a new camera, with the more nimble and graceful moves i can make with my Sachtler!
now if my HPX170 would ever come??? then i'll really have a new camera.

Sachtler smooth loveness is good.

Hope that your 170 comes soon to rest upon it. You have excellent taste! ;-)
