Good Hard Drive??

I'm looking to add another internal drive for video capture to my dual G5.
I was looking at a serial ATA drive with 7200rpm,
and I want at least 300gb.
Of all the manafactures out there, who makes the most reliable drives?

Opinions?

I have good experiences with both Seagate and Maxtor. I think Seagate has bigger drives; 300, 400, maybe even 500 gig now.

LaCie. ALWAYS GO WITH LACIE. I have a 250 GB but I find I'm always deleting footage for space, and LaCie has a bunch of different sizes, compatible w/ mac and pc. Also, the Apple store sells 1TB LaCie's. 1TB=1000GB.

I would recommend the Maxtor MaXLine Pro series.
Its fast with a 16MB cache, and is intended for 24/7 operation. Capacity is up to 500 GB per disk.
Alternatively there is also the Maxtor DiamondMax 11 series, a little cheaper but not intended for 24/7 operation.

I have made several SATA raids using these disks, works great.

If you want external firewire disks Lacie is actually not that great. as there is insufficient cooling in the cabinet on the d2 series. G-Techs G-raid are way better with an active fan, perforated cabinet and tall feet that lift the disk to enable a better airflow from below.

LaCie drives are less expensive, but not necessarily the most reliable. I've heard of more failures with their drives, than Seagate, Medea G-RAIDS or Glyphs etc.

Thanks all for your thoughts.

I already have a couple of external Lacie drives.
I just find that editing and rendering always goes quicker and smoother when using an internal drive.

I try to use my external Lacies for just storage and backup.

Now, do those new 400-500gb internal drives have any drawbacks? Do they generate much more heat? Are they less reliable?

I always thought the trip up to Big Sur from San Diego was a Good Hard Drive

Yeah I know of a couple "good hard drives" that leave my WRX needing new tires afterwards.
