Good external hard drive for editing on iMac

Could anybody recommend a good external hard drive for editing FCE4 on a new iMac with a Firewire 800 connection? I'm hoping I can get a TB or more for something like $200 to $300?

Not firewire, but I just picked up a western digital portable, the Passport USB 3.0, and I'm super impressed with it. Just as fast as the firewire one I bought a year ago. I got a TB and it was on sale at Best Buy for $109 at the time. So worth it.

Thanks -- the price looks nice -- but I don't have USB 3 on the iMac. Only USB 2, and wouldn't that be too slow for HDV editing???

gtechnology.com their products are available at the mac store. I highly recommend against Lacie, Western Digital and Seagate external drives. The G-Raids are good, you might pay a few more dollars up front but it's much better than losing your project due to a faulty drive.

I'll second Other World Computing (.com) as top quality, reliable, and the best customer service anywhere. All of our drives and RAM come from them.

I use different brands like LaCie, G-Tech, WD, etc. G-Tech works best for me but you definitely need a fast connection like eSata, Firewire800 or USB 3, because that's going to be your bottleneck.

Thanks, guys. Appreciate the prompt response! That's helpful info! It's amazing how much storage you can get nowadays -- back when I started at the TV studio here my computer's hard drive held 2 gigs!

Don't use USB 2.0 or 3.0. Stick to firewire 800, Esata. USB 2.0 3.0 have short data burst and not a fast sustained data rate. Learned that the hard way, someone mislead me years ago.

Also G-Raid is awesome.

I believe that G-Tech uses Hitachi drives, because that company owns G-Tech. However, I've had Seagates, WDs, and Hitachis fail. All drive fails. It just a question of when.
