good codec for HVX200 on windows NLE

Hey all. Mac AND PC user here, and just need some help with one side of the equation. I have my Mac workflow all worked out, which I use for long-form projects.

But! I'm in a bit of a bind with my Windows situation. I'm going to be doing some shorts, and I have a spare Windows bay... Obviously I'm shooting HVX200, but I may be intercutting footage from a variety of sources.

I'm not into Raylight, and I'll be working with a few guys who all use different NLEs on PC.

So far, I'm thinking mostly of using DVfilmmaker to convert all of my footage to DNxHD and keep it there. The reason is that the codec is free, and very compatible. (I've been able to get it to work in Vegas, Premiere, FCP for when I bring it to Mac, and I also have an Xpress Pro seat.)

But is there a better option, I'm overlooking? How does DNxHD hold up to recompression/generational loss? I use sheervideo on Mac and I love it, but I'm not looking to spend money, if possible, especially with some great codecs floating around there for free.

I've done all of the searches, and seen Avid's propaganda. I've done my own tests and I think it's a good codec.

I know DVCPRO HD does not hold up very well during recompression. What's interesting, according to Cineform's tests, is that the first five generations take a huge hit, but the difference between gen 5 and gen 15 is marginal. Which is pretty cool when you think of it.

I guess distilled, that's my question right there: How does DNxHD stack up to DVCPRO HD? (and any other codecs if you are familiar with them.)

Besides Microcosm and Sheervideo, does anybody have a rough idea of which codecs are the best at handling recompression?

Thanks for any and all help!

That's the thing.... as I said, I really don't want to do raylight.

I just want to find out what the general feelings are on codecs that handle recompression well.

Really... I like cineform... I've decided on Vegas as my windows NLE, though.

I decided I don't need the long form capability of AVID, as well as the headaches; I've been through too many bad times and too few good ones to justify continuing AVID. There's 1700$ down the tubes. Hopefully I can barter to someone or something.

I tried the Beta of the new premiere and it was as buggy as the worst alpha I've ever used. So... with premiere bugs... no trust from this guy.

Vegas works for me. It's good. So that's that. Luckily it's the most compatible of all the NLEs codec-wise.

DVxHD, DV100, and it comes with cineform. So if you think cineform's a good deal, I'll give it a try.

Thanks a bunch
