Good, cheap Manfrotto tripod for DVX100b

Hi all,

I recently bought a DVX100a with a few accessories and a shotgun mic. Since I'm a full time student and am only able to do freelance work in my spare time, I'm now a little short on cash. I have one of those really cheap and crappy $20 tripods, and it's obviously time for an upgrade.

Can anyone recommend me a good, solid Manfrotto tripod for the $150 range? Does such a tripod even exist?

Thanks,

Jordan

I guess it doesn't have to be a Manfrotto tripod per se...it's just that i've good experiences with manfrotto products

There are good bogen/manfrotto kits available for the $200 range at B&H. I use one all the time with the HMC150, and before that I used it with a DVC30 and a DVX100a. Something with the 3126 head and the 3011 legs would work nicely. You won't be able to weigh it down w/other accessories (rails/flags/adapters), but these are robust little critters. The 3126 (now known as the 128LP) is a fluid head that has a shoe version, too (can't remember the # (3130?)). Anyway, these things last forever and take a beating. Now if you're making "Films" these may not be what you want... But if you need a utility player - they are a good choice. I find them used on eBay all the time for a little less. Bogen/Manfrotto is real good about getting out replacement parts if you need them, too.
Here's a link to a B&H kit: (you can find these elsewhere, this is just an example)

I'm not a big fan of the leg set in this kit, but you can find 3011s and 3021 elsewhere that get up to about 6' with the center column extended... great for getting over crowds at live events....

Just my .02.....

I picked up a Bogen 3221 w/3130 head on ebay a year ago or so for less than $150........The head is not as smooth as a 501 but works well for my applications, the only thing I don't care for are the legs when fully extended aren't super solid, but if you are aware of this panning can be done with out shake or jutter.
