Gonna get our first FS100 would you recommend the Ninja to get more quality out of it, plus we edit on Final cut pro also how good is the kit lens?=)

The video quality isn't hugely different, the workflow from Ninja to FCP is fantastic though - just drag, drop and edit.

I'd say it's worth it for that fact alone.

I'd confirm with Atomos that the HDMI of the FS-100 "plays nice" with the Ninja. I know there have been issues with some external recorders and the FS-100.

The Atomos Ninja and FS100 don't play nicely together if you are shooting 24p. The flags for pulldown and TC are both sent through a portion of the FS100 HDMI signal that have never been used by any other manufacturer.

Unfortunately, Atomos can not update the firmware of the Ninja to start recognizing the pulldown and TC coming from the FS100. The hardware chipset being utilized by Atomos is incapable of recognizing that portion of the HDMI signal; actually what happens is that chipset actively ignores that portion of the signal.

This is not Atomos fault as it would be impossible to know that any manufacturer would suddenly decide to start sending important (let alone vital) information down that portion of the bitstream.

The Ninja is a capable product, but unless you are primarily shooting 1080/59.94i, and don't plan on shooting 24p from the FS100 to the Ninja, it may not be the best pairing choice, as of this moment.

As an alternative option, the latest update to the Convergent-Design NanoFlash, makes it compatible with the FS100 in 24p mode. I have spoken with a couple of clients who have used the FS100 and NanoFlash with great success.

In the interest of full disclosure Hot Rod Cameras is a dealer for both Atomos and Convergent-Design, we had the first Ninja units on US soil and got to spend a good bit of time with the FS100 and the Ninja, and did our best to try to make the pairing work.

Interesting to note, it may be possible to get the Samurai to work with the FS100 in 24p via the Atomos "Connect" HDMI to HDSDI converter. We are expecting delivery of the first Samurai units in the USA any time now.

Also worth noting is that there was some news a while back of an Atomos software pulldown remover that would work with the Ninja/FS100 pairing to remove the interpolated frames, I haven't received word of that software shipping yet, so I don't think it's an option as of right now.

Hope this proves helpful

This isn't going to help anyone in NTSCland much, but I can confirm that the Ninja plays very nicely with the FS100 in PALland. Nicer than the KiPro, in fact. The Ninja provides 'proper' 1080psf25 - 25p wrapped in a 1080i stream. Just tell your edit package to treat it as progressive and away you go. The KiPro stuff all came out interlaced, which of course requires DE-interlacing (and therefore losing 25% of your resolution) if you're going to scale it down further into the production chain. Sigh.

I was at Atomos' offices last week and they ran me through their updated work on pulldown for 24p, from what I remember it was using some kind of interpolation to generate the 'off' frames that were causing grief, the result was smooth, progressive 24fps playback. I believe it'll be coming through in a firmware update sometime soon.

As Matt said, for 25p, it's seamless.

yikes thanks all I shoot is 24fps good to all of you thank =) not getting Ninja until I know this is fixed
