"GONE" Short Film

Short, simple, and sweet. I loved the cinematography, how did you do those tracking shots in such a small area? The shot of the ring at the end is very nice, I like how the ring was placed in the light.

Beautifully done.

Wow. That was really good camera work. Did you use any kind of adapter? The opening shot on the beer bottle has nice shallow DOF. The tracking shots give it a nice cinematic feel. I hope I can do stuff half as good with my DVX when I get it tommorow.

That was really nice. I especially liked the sound design.

I had one big problem with it, though, which is that your main character seems to treat the whole situation with a sort of no-bullshit aplomb. She loudly tries the door, loudly climbs through the window, takes a moment to sit and stare at the guy, and loudly leaves. What if he woke up? I've been part of a similar situation and I have to say what you've depicted is a very dangerous situation. It made the whole thing ring a little bit false to me.

That said, I think you've created a great mood. I think it might be a good exercise to try cutting it down to a :60 PSA. I'm sure there's an organization somewhere that would use it, and you'd be helping them and getting more exposure for your film.

Merry Christmas.

This was really well done, and I liked it, but I agree with dougspice about her being overly loud about the whole thing. You'd almost think she was hitting him, not the other way around.

(edit: Or was it supposed to be that he's passed out from drinking so much? Even still, she puts herself at great risk barging in there like that...)

I also didn't like when she paused to look at herself in the mirror. I think this could have been pulled off better without having a pause for the character to look in the mirror and say "see, audience? I am being abused!" I think most audiences are smart enough to figure it out without having this little moment of self reflection. That was the biggest issue for me.

very nice camera work. It's hard to tell a story in 2 minutes but you kept my attention. Did you use a steady cam for this?

very very very well done my friend~

i can tell, no adapter was used, no steadicam, seemed handheld and dolly. But man, great editing, Great framing, very very tight. A plus.

i dont want to echo everything here, but it was great... shot beautifully. agree about her being too loud, but i love the opening shot and sound with the door hitting the lock...

i've never posted anything up on myspace, but past two shorts i've seen on there look great, in terms of quality compression... whats the upload limit, is it 100mb like youtube? if so, you did well keeping it under and looking good.

Thanks guys for the feedback. I used the letus 35. It's a major pain to use because of how much light it cuts down. The room was so bright during the shoot. Take care dooods.

I liked it! Though, I wish it didn't say "a film about ending a bad realtionship" under the film, kinda gives the plot away :)
I don't know if it's compression, but I was using a headset when watching it, and
it sounded like there was some clipping noises between some of the sound/foley
effects, some fading will fix that.
All in all, nice storytelling!

Nice tight visual storytelling... I watched it with the sound off and I still got a great feel from it. The TV on adds a real atmosphere to the scene, it seems like you worked hard to get a sync where the cat was chasing prey.
What compelled you to tell this story above others? Tell us a bit about the casting and pre-production.

Ya it took a few times to get the timing right on the television. I chose this story because I wanted to direct something and this is what I had in my head. And I will edit the synopsis a bit for ya...you are right. Pre Production was a bit of a pain, we completely re-did my friends living room and bedroom. Her roommates were pretty annoyed haha. I just told them that they were in film school and what did they expect? As far as casting goes I new Summer Mcclure from a music video that my buddy directed and I wanted her for the part. So I called her and asked her. Take care guys!

I loved this short, loved how the story was portrayed and loved the camera work. As some people have said the sound design was very good, it helps to create such a good atmosphere that a lot of short films lack. Another thing that speaks about how well done this piece is refers to the fact that there is no dialogue, yet we are still completely drawn into the piece and are mesmerised by it. The final tracking shot to the ring is also very nice.

Great short :)

Well shot!!! I liked the look of it a lot.

Can you talk about your set up?

1. What kind of lights did you use?

2. V-detail level in camera?

3. What kind of CC did you do in post?

I used 2 tweenies and a baby as far as lights go. I didn't light it though. My Dp friend Aaron Riggs did. V-detail thin for the web i believe and I hardley did any color correction. 90% of it was the stock footage.

good job...it is kinda odd that she was all loud about it but eh thats could be how she is right?

Looks good man. There is some great camera work in this.

I like the concept. I think the look in the mirror works, maybe it could have been shorter but I think it helps setup the situation and helps the audience gain sympathy for her. As far has her loud entrance and exit, I think out of all people she would know how "he" get's and that she could be as loud as she wanted to and he wouldn't wake up, so in that regard I think that works also, but there may be a little suspension of disbelief there.

I also think it's great you timed the cat and prey... it's little touches like that, that really make it stand out.

Thanks for the info. I'm curious to know how your dp friend set up the lights. Did he put any outside of the window? CTB?
Oh, and I wanted to know the v-detail of your file scene such as -3 or 0 or whatever. Sorry for the interrogation!

Ya he had a few lights outside with some ctb on them i believe. The v-detail was at 0 I believe but im not entirely sure.
