Golden - production blog

Dean, saw the opening scene! pretty f***kin awesome!
I will join your mailing list!
I am wrapping my short COLD WHISPERS and will post the trailer too, so I would probably need some love back from you and the DVXers too (smile).

Alladdin! Fantastic, thanks so much. Love comments like that. Can't wait to shared some more scenes.

Do you have a link or thread for Cold Whispers?

QUESTION:

I'm designing the ghosts at the moment and am looking for great examples of subtle ghosts. I like the idea of seeing something but only briefly and at very intense moments.

Mostly the ghosts will be invisible, just their effect on the environment, mist, leaves, shadows but now and again during lightning flashes or in the shadows I'd like to show something freaky.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Dean.

fantastic job on the opening scene...I loved the tension you were able to get out of the slow movement that lead up to the collapse. That hole looked great falling in, I can't wait to read more about how you went about achieving some of the shots.

I think that's the way to go, show as little as possible. When you must show "something" keep it subtle.

Think of Polanski's "Repulsion" and "Rosemary's Baby." They showed very little, but were very chilling.

Even the best monster movies, show very little, ie. "Jaws" and "Alien."

On the other hand "Thirteen Ghosts" went overboard with the CGI and it wasn't in the least bit scary...

Let the audience's imagination do most of the work.

Deano,
Nice bio for the pair of you on the Golden website. I have to say, I keep going back and viewing your teaser...to me it has just the perfect balance in elements to build tension and hook me!!! BTW I couldn't find a mailing list or anything but please let us know if you organize something.

Thanks so much tbroadwater, I really should do a VFX breakdown on the opening sequence. Could be great for the DVD special features too.

You definitely should. That would be very interesting to watch. Hope things are going well! -Matt

Totally agree, Alien was perfect until the - SPOILER - last few moments when you saw the man in the suit being blown out of the airlock. The Thing is still my favorite "monster movie" since by the end you still didn't know what the F@#k you were looking at.

I'm going to have to watch Repulsion again, I hope they resolve his case soon, he's a fantastic filmaker but the whole case is effed up. "judge not" as a wise book says but I'd like to see him accept his next oscar at the Kodak theater.

SonicStates, thank you so much for the compliments, I really really appreciate all of the encouragement.

I'm really excited, next weekend I'm shooting some tests and VFX plates with one of the lead actresses so can't wait.

I'll have to cobble together some html for a subscription on the website, that's a great idea! As the website grows what else would you like to see on it?

In the meantime you can email me at info@goldenthemovie.com and I'll add you to the list.

Opening scene looks great, love the HVX with 35mm lenses. Well done!

Thanks JJonasz!

I use the CineD setting which has a really nice film characteristic when used with a DOF adapter. I feel it has a sort of super 16mm quality, but with the SLR bokeh, and no jello!

I'll probably get a 7d for the low light capability but the HVX combo has a lovely feel to it.

Check out this trailer for Marin Blue, with no adapter, shows you what can be achieved in the right hands. http://vimeo.com/4056557

Looking great Deano - though the fx seem a little groovy for a 'supernatural thriller' - in the serious sense - more like horror/teen/pulp 'entertainment' - am i wrong?

Either way i think its looking great mate, and really enjoyed watching the clip posted at the start of the thread!

Thanks Lawrie,

It would definitely be in the Horror section of the video store but it's not a monster or serial killer movie. But I'm happy to let the audience think it is at the start but the tone shifts once the "teens" are faced with either rescuing a friend or losing a fortune in gold. Sort of The Shining meets Treasures of the Sierra Madre, but for todays ADD audience (myself included.)

So it's a bit of both with a morality tale, phew you get your money's worth with this picture baby : )

Thanks for enjoying the clip, working on more as we speak!

Cheers Lawrie!
