Golden - production blog

Thanks again Matt for recommending Fatna and the SF SAG office. Just joined sfcasting.com today and working on my actor breakdowns.

And double thanks for updating your thread on Stricken, it's really inspirational, educational and much appreciated.

Best,

Dean

P.S. Got a bunch of questions that I want to ask you but not on a board. I'll PM you.

Cool clip, Dean. I really liked the birds flying away and the descent into the mine shaft was cool! Let me know if you need any help with post production sound.

Sweet Brad. Yes please, that would be great! I checked out the examples on your website, fantastic work man.

It'll probably be a while before the final mix but i would really appreciate any advise on what to get right now before I've shot anything and also things to avoid, concentrate on for the actual shoot.

Awesome, thanks Brad!

Dean.

PM sent.

Hey Dean, how's the casting going? I'm on page 56 on the script so far, very cool.
Did you post the breakdowns yet?
Cheers

Just got off the phone with sfcasting.com and Golden has been activated! I'm still pending SAG but moving forward.

Going to post locally first then spread the net wider if not finding the magic.

Just got to say that casting is going incredibly well. Going SAG was the best decision I ever made. Can't wait to share the news with you all.

Dean, Yeah, i checked out the potential casts reels, very lovely indeed.
This is SAG Indie then or modified low budget?
Are the talent responsible for their agent's fees ? 8 or 12 hour work rate?

Just in the same boat right now,
Cheers

Thanks Philip.

Just juggling the schedule at the moment. I've got an experienced producer coming on board so that's going to make everything go so much smoother. Casting wise I'm almost there, might have to shoot later in the year to change a potential into a confirmed, but it'll be well, well worth it.

Love it, Dean! Well done!!

I am not too crazy about the opening sunrise scene, though. I think it would be more dramatic if you just start with the forest scenes. I think that the sink hole could be much bigger and more dramatic. That's one of the most important scenes in your movie, I guess, so it should be really dramatic with a BIG hole opening up and LOTS of dust/particles flying around, tons of birds flying away scared, etc. You could even have a shot of the canape of the forest from above, with flocks of birds flying away and a dust cloud forming overt the forest.

Hi Giganova,

Really love the idea of a shot of the forest from above, need to figure out a way to do a poor mans helicopter shot but I think it'll add a lot of scale to the sequence.

Great idea, thanks!

Dean.

Thanks for sharing! This looks like a great project (I have something similar in development ;) and I'll be following your progress with interest.

Your opening scene was very well done. However, I think you should simply refer to it as your teaser, because it does exactly that, very well I might add.

I like the slow opening... classic way to build curiosity and suspense. It worked well in Alien!

The music at the end had a definite late 70s, John Carpenter vibe. Interesting choice... is it a period piece?

Great job.

Hey Maximus,

You have the best comments! But I have this dilemma, when I say it's a teaser people say there's not enough to tell the story by so I have to revert to labeling it as the opening scene (which is what it is) but I do hear you : )

I love the John Carpenter reference, huge fan of The Thing so very happy you felt a JC vibe. It's not a period piece but the past does come into play.

Thanks again,

Dean : )

Golden looks like it is shaping up to be amazing. I am excited to see what becomes of it. Let me know if you need anything. -Matt

Just got back from an amazing weekend. It was one of those weekends that you imagine someone else having, it was like an episode of entourage. Flew into LA, met one of my cast on the plane. Met with a dream actress in a swanky hotel, took meetings with a production designer, casting director, producer and met yet another dream actress.

I'm jealous of myself.

Just checking in on you, Dean. Excited to hear what is coming next for your feature!

Thanks Matt!

I've been pretty busy, I met with a local studio last week to discuss the feasibility of shooting the project up here as opposed to LA. It went really well so fingers crossed. I've also been storyboarding like crazy, done 1/5th of the film so far and been concentrating on scenes set within the mine so I can plan the sets for the Production Designer.

Meeting one of the potential leads this weekend too.

Chugging along

Jealous of you too :)

Just kidding. Congrats, the opening scene looks very cool.

Good luck with production.
