Godzilla (2014)

I would hate to be the HISHE guy. There are millions are options here.

This film should have been 30 minutes shorter. It was painful sitting through it. I don't care what genre it fulfills, it was not an enjoyable film. I could see the few moments of Godzilla hero action was compelling, but that is about it. $9 for 9 minutes of action, and 111 minutes of theater seat butt pain. I wasn't even very far into the film and I realized that this was going to be slow.

I totally agree that Cranston's character was the most compelling and he should have been involved longer, maybe for the whole film.

And why, why, why, why, why must we be subjected over and over and over to inept, incomplete and incorrect representations of military capability? I can't even name the main character (that is how memorable he was) that is a bomb disposal expert...and he is somehow capable with nuclear devices, and the "team" the military sends with the only nuclear bomb on a train to address this monster threat doesn't have any experience with live bombs or something stupid. Remember, the main character asks the commanding officer, "When is the last time your men worked with a live bomb?" or some nonsense. So the guy in charge decides to add this dude not in his unit to accompany the nuke to San Francisco...who barely gets on the train as its leaving.

I mean, it is like....either make the military a joke, or make it real (and you can have the monsters beat a realistic military, that would be sensical). Hollywood, please, just stop trying to do both.

EDIT: I regret writing some of this, the more I've learned about the director. Watching the free preview for his AE course here that was mentioned on ProLost. As usual, BTS context sort of mellows one's opinion and makes you appreciate stuff more and take less for granted.

^^^ Gotta love how they go to disarm a bomb and, you know, forgot to bring tools. Also, let's go looking for toxic waste in our military uniforms, then take off our masks for extra measure. Tonnes of stupid moments.

I don't think I've ever felt less emotional in a movie when the characters got together. I didn't even really like Cranston in this, I'm a huge fan of his from Breaking Bad so I'll will put this 100% down to bad direction.

Well...someone was impressed.

With newly-minted blockbuster Godzilla under his belt, director Gareth Edwards will helm the first of several standalone Star Wars films coming in the years ahead.

Perhaps the first film will be about the Sarlacc. Or the Rancor. Or perhaps the space slug from the asteroid field. Hehe. I jest. My money will be on Han Solo or Boba Fett.

The subject of the new movie hasn't been formally announced, though Disney has previously stated that the standalone films will be origin stories, with everyone from Yoda, Boba Fett, to Han Solo thrown around as possible candidates.
