God Awful Exporting

Bag of Douche
Hello, I am new to these forums although I have been reading them for a about a week now, and they seem to be home to the more intelligible of the DV community.

I'm not sure if this is the right forum, but I see others asking for help here, so here goes:

I need to export footage from my camera (CanonZR60... yes I know...) to my PC, however I've run into a frustrating problem. Having bought the firewire and the board and installing it into my PC, I find that with the many programs I have tried the export always ends up capturing only about 1/15 frames (at the very best)

Upon playing back in .wmv format after it has been exported it is still just as low fps as it was when i "tried" to export it.

My specs:
p4 1.8ghz
Geforce2mx 32mb
Win98 SE
256MB SDRAM <--- perhaps this?

I have used programs varying from Ulead, VEM, and Studio8, all give me similar results, although studio8 doesnt even export it says that my Hardrives can't meet the minimum requirements for the output (Roughly 4.5 gigs/sec) and I can't seem to get the rate down, Ive tried lowering it to 150x300, but it still wants to write at 4.5 gigs!

Help would be appreciated, thankyou

Re: God Awful Exporting

You're trying to 'capture' the images from the camera. Make sure your software is setup to capture DV firewire. This is not at 4.5G second and is at a fixed size (i.e. you can't lower it to smaller without taking even more processing power)

Main issue will be the speed of your hard drive you're captuing to although it sounds like your memory size is pretty small.

I'm not a PC person but you might run a speed test on your hard drive and see how fast it is and make sure you have reasonable memory for your capture program. (Turn off any other applications, especially small runs running in the background that might take time and slow down your system)

Re: God Awful Exporting

The only proggies i have running in the backround are explorer and systray, so basically i have NOTHING running, however you're saying that it could be the write speed of my Hardrives? I can tell you right now the speeds... one moment...

Hardrive: C:\ = 3500 kb\s
D:\ = 4200 kb\s

And in the first post, I didn't mean 4.5 gb per second, I meant 450 mb/s.

So that's it then I have to install a new Hard-disk? Or is there a way around this?

Re: God Awful Exporting

Turn off explorer (networking can slow down a system, especially something like explorer) and try capturing to your D drive.
It seems very slow by the numbers so you might want to de-fragment the drive and make sure you have reasonable space.

Re: God Awful Exporting

yeah that's the thing with editing it can take just one thing on your system to bottleneck the rest of them. But with that said I remember editing on my AMD 350mhz with a 20gig drive and 256mb of ram and a 8 meg video card... lol that sucked but it' was still workable for a clean capture.... you need to have a good 7200rmp hard drive installed, you'll see the difference.

Re: God Awful Exporting

Scott - Explorer needs to be running... I am referring to explorer the program that runs windows along with systray, not explorer the internet browser

Also I just reinstalled windows and it is a fresh partition... but perhaps I should defragment... couldn't hurt...

I am frustrated by the lack of good editing programs that are usable without any third party mods for windows 98. It angers me because I do not want to upgrade to a new OS that has blatent RAM optimization issues, I refuse to be put in a situation where I am taking one evil and recieving a host of others.

So in fewer words: What I want to find is a decent editing program that will run on windows 98, and I have searched High and Low...
