Go35Pro Footage

my concern isn't the edge blur; rather the flaring/bleeding, whatever it's called, on the edges of objects in the shots. a lot of blue silhouetting along the edges of the puppies, the hat on the baby in the stroller, and jim's jacket walking in front of bh, along the edges of the gray. is this simply something i never noticed on dvx stock before, the adapter, the lens?

The word on the HD is that it's going to be a while -- probably closer to the end of May/early June, given that mass production of something takes minimum 3 weeks and the "parent" parts have not been machined to finality yet.

Let me be clear about this, so no one gets unnecessarily frustrated: if you have a project that requires an HD capable adapter in May or June, do not pin your hopes on waiting to use the Go35HD. I do not want anyone to have a production timeline slip based on these soft estimates of the release dates that I'm giving here. The bottom line is that I want to have this adapter out the door ASAP, but I need it to work as well as possible :) I expected it to be done now but that's just not the case. Sorry, but the engineer's doing his best.

I really wish Jonathan and his crew no ill-will, but I hope you understand that it's frustrating from where I sit to think that most people comparing my adapter to the G35 have two things in mind: full frame, high res footage from my GL1 with no CC, a prototype adapter, and basically handheld work in a park; against five or six highly compressed clips, shot with the DVX, under controlled conditions, and SIMILO (again, controlled conditions, the DVX, a LOT of light, CC, etc.)

You bring up a very good point here. I personally wasn't comparing the controlled demo's Cinemek has on their site now, but rather Jonathan's old demo shooting his own grandfather (which was run and gun like yours). Of course, his was on a sunny day and not overcast.

But you're correct that most people are probably comparing the controlled professional shoots to your current run and gun. I would not get frustrated by this though. Think of it this way: People are comparing your adapter to the cinemek in a positive way. I think you're damn close and I'll bet most people think so too. I don't think any other adapter out there can say that.

Can't wait for some beta testers to shoot something in a controlled environment with your adapter!

isn't it an immediate handicap as it makes it a bit shaky if you are doing handheld?

You have to think about zoom diffrently when using a 35mm adapter. Yes you are zoomed in to film a diffusion screen, but the screen is solidly attached to the cam. Its not like you trying to zoom in on a far away object and you're trying to hold the camera steady.

Once your zoom and focus are set on the screen, your real focal length is based on the lens attached to the adapter.

I think this is a good question. I'll keep doing whatever tests need doing, but if you've been following "the adapter world" you've seen that even Steev Dinkins' $3,600 MPIC shows some chroma issues under certain conditions:

Gev Babit: There seems to be a lot of chromatic abberations, especially the blue, why is that?

Steev Dinkins: Ask yourself, when you DO see abberations, is your audience going to give a ****?

Ben Winter: I concur. I see it all the time in movies. Blue is at the low end of the spectrum, it gets "aberrated" a lot.

Dan Diaconu: ... I have a few pictures (some of you may remember) where the camcorder takes a pic that looks WORSE than another one using the MPIC + a Nikkor 4/200 on it.

I also saw a pic today of a lens which has the same green blue effect on the lens itself (not of any picture). It looks like they all do that towards the edges and is getting worse with higher contrast images. Oh well, at least I have no optical involvement in all this. It is all between the lens in front (Nikkor? or else) and the lens behind (camcorder). Nothing else.

Dennis Wood of Brevis fame says a lot of issues arise due to the 35mm lens itself, and some DV cameras have their own particular color issues:

Dennis Wood: Just a few notes on the grabs..particularly the XL2 ones:

1. The 16X zoom showed chromatic aberation under sky backlit conditions before we attached the adpater...and a note from Mikey, the XL2 owner

"Just a heads up, the softness on the left side of the XL2 footage is fault of my camera, the left edge seems to get soft and I haven't found a solution from that ...."

2. My F1.4 50mm shows some barrel distortion..it's the lens. With a slower F/2.8 28 to 70mm zoom, there is none.

It's amazing really how much you learn about your camera, and other ones, just by analyzing footage. One thing I've seen over and over again and it's this golden rule:

When troubleshooting any adapter/lens combo, rule out the video camera and its lens first.

I've looked a lot of frame tests from just bare cameras and found barrel distortion in just about all of them, particularly at full wide. Additionally, users have reported areas that remain out of focus, edge softness and lots of other oddities. With the XL2, Mikey was setting back focus using the 51" TV, as a monitor, focusing at infinity. With a bright sky, and trees, purple fringing at 16X zoom with the bare lens was very evident...particulary as the iris was opened.

From Jonathan Houser:

Let's not forget, the DVX or any camera for that matter is not totally free from chromatic aberration. Although these adapters greatly reduce the effects, they can be seen (especially in extreme circumstances such as the florescent light) from time to time.

Alright guys, enough of the techie talk for me for a while. I'm going to bow out of the conversation until the week's end, and busy myself with all sorts of other things. The next time you hear from me it will be to announce that I'm over on the go-35.com forum and the order system is live :)

If need be, I can be reached: info at go-35.com

This thing looks promising. I want to buy one just because Jim seems like a really cool guy. :) I'm glad Timur's putting out footage as well. what a great team.

My, SGpro came today...... I smell shoot out.

But you guys, its very important to stop comparing adapters directly. Take each one as its own creature. The chrachteristics of one cant really be compared to the charachteristics of another. they all dont operate the same way.

When is say shoot out, i mean more, comparison of footage. Because each 35mm adapter gives its own distinct flavor to the footage. The G35 gives Flavor X while Jims apater gives Flavor Y, while the SGpro gves Flavor Z to the footage. and then it comes down to the quality of the lenses you use, and their own charachteristics. Dont forget, the light is now passing through like like 25-37 pieces of glass before it reaches the DVX CCD. ( depending on he lens, figure the average lens has 5-10 elements, the Adapter has 3-4 and the DVX has 15)
any one can go compltely wrong just by introducing a certiann color to the mix.
Forexample, why was there Chroma abbrasion on the puppies, but not in thecab????? God knows, maybe the wavelengths of light were reacting with eachother in that situation.

but you guys have to understand, you have to give somewhere, and keep the cost under $10,000. There is a reason the P&S Technic costs so much. there is serious quality glass in there.

same reason the HVX lens has chroma abbrasion, as does the XL2 lens, the JVC HD100 lens, and the DVX lens..... the list goes on..... Zeiss and Leica lenses are $3,000 for example. but they also exhibit almost no chroma problems.

Make up your mind. Do you want to compare them or not? It was yourself and Jim who kicked off the whole G35 comparison talk a couple of pages back when you said "i think Jim has just about matched the G35 for half the price" And Jim said it was aimed at the same people excited by the G35, and he didn't need to buy one cause he had made one. I'm not a G35 fan boy but I have yet to see an adapter with bokeh as good, which has nothing to do with colour correction.

If you can't see the difference fair enough, I can. I have my own adapter that has the bokeh I want, I'm not trying to sell anything. Like I said it was Jim and Timur that brought up the G35 comparisons.

Then buy a G35, you will be happier. :)

well, actually youre right i did change my mind.

i came to my latest conclusion of not comparing them after thinking about it for a long time. i have been fortunate enough to use a couple of 35 adpters in different stages of development. and each one jsut renders the image different. it actually is good because, maybe for this shoot a G35 would be best because of _________, but for this music video i want to shoot next week, i need the _________qualities of the Go35. And for that interview i need the ________ of the M2 Etc.

the more of these ive used the more i realise, its more like choosing filmstock. certain models offer different charchteristics and personal preference, and aesthetic choices are going to become the main deciding factors between them.

For example. I have used a LEtus 35 "beta" adapter and a later model letus 35. Technichally the same adapter. but they produce different footage, even with the same lens. The older version looked more like a promist filter had been applied. where as teh newer one was a little contrastier and sharper.

It s up to you. i dont think theres a "best adapter" anymore.

ASG, I hope this isn't seen as personal attack, but you seem to have some sort of vendetta against the supporters of this particular adapter. Is there any particular reason why? If you have problems with the adapter then that's perfectly valid. I myself have questioned some of the results of the adapter. It can be done nicely. You just seem to come across with this hostile attitude. No offense intended, I'm just wondering why.

lol ASG, its okay, I'm sure some one out there will buy your homemade adapter too, no reason to get angry at others =)

maybe I should have put a smiley on the end of each line :)

EDIT: Ok I went and had another look at Jim's footage and like I said before the results are very impressive. There are advantages to having a static adapter (no noise, no batteries etc), and as far as statics go you can't buy a better adapter at present, and certainly not for that price. So apologies for the nit picking and sarcasm. I promise to be more positive in future :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)
