Go35Pro Footage

Well, we were suspect enough -- two grown men lugging this massive camera around and climbing all over sand hills and a CAT bulldozer... it was obvious these guys were "too cool" for that sort of thing, so I never thought to approach them :)

I'm a motorcycle-guy myself and I'd be happy to help - only I'm on the other side of the world, but send me a beta and I'll get some footage for ya ;-)

Generally though - people have a tendency to think that motorcyclists are tough, badass guys with cold hearts, but we're just like you - and we love to show off our bikes so I'm sure he would have been up for the challenge :-)

Keep up the good work, Jim!

well we were shooting illegally, on Federal propery..... tehy were burning out illegally in a national park.... two wrongs DEFINITLY dont make a right in the eyes of the NYPD.... we would have been shot or something.

On that note....

The footage from the cat looks really nice. too bad the crap Macro is making the edges mushy. The final Acromat, will be better. ive seen one, but it was a +7 the go 35 needs ithink a +10. the +7 didint let us zoom in far enough to make a useable picutre. but the difference in image quality is staggering.

Just figured out how to leap the edge distortion hurdle. I'll be doing some brief tests this week and then by next week pre-orders will be open for the Pro on the DVX!

Same time, probably. I'm wiring the money to the manufacturer tomorrow, which means the parts should arrive by week's end.

Until I have the time to get a decent h.264 compressed version of the footage up, here's a still along with a zip file of a few others from the shoot.

I call it my self portrait:

Why do you call it your self portrait?

Jim has made a breakthrough.

I just tested his latest tweak. and its perfect. No barrel distorion, no color seperation, no vingetting, nice and sharp.

Good work jim.

he has the footage, it will probably be up tonight, as he is working right now.

Can't wait to see the footage. Timur, how would you compare this breakthrough to the cinemek G35? Is it closer to it now? Surpassing it?

And how close will the standard be to the pro, or to the g35 as well?? :)
No, i'm serious, be honest with me, how much "not as good" quality will the standard be compared to the two?

i think Jim has just about matched the G35 for half the price. But to tell you the ttruth, ive never see anythign from the g35 that was full resolution. when you drop soft footage to 480x240 or 340X240, of course it looks sharp and perfect.

To date I have seen LEtus 35, Go35 , and Wayne Kinneys SGpro/sg35 adapter at full res. ( i have even seen the sg35 as an AVI uncompressed) The SGpro, and The Go35 are the only two i consider to be awesome at this price point. The G35 seems a mute point now. These two adapters that provide equal quality, are available at half the price. No to mention with an excellent build quality, although the go 35 needs a rail system.

( i just didint like the Letus... it was very dusty... and the image was too soft for m taste)

BAsically, the improvement, what ever jim did, was that now you are able to zoom in further, to about Z80, and completely eliminate the vingetting problem. also, since the tweak, he can use a century optics, achromat, which is of higher quality, with little or no chroma abbrasion, or barrel distorion. plus the GG he uses anyway, reduces teh contrast of the scene, of gives the feel of an increase in Dynamic range. Just look at the Caterpillar footage. Try and find a blowout..... in direct sunlight no less, and it still has detail in the shadows.

I cannot answer anythign about the difference in quality between the pro and standard version. he said verbally that the standard has some visible grain. but i have not seen its footage.

Hey Jim,
Footage looks good but there's lots of camera shaking. I guess it was handheld and not on tripod.
I am really curious about how will it work with a camera crane or will it?
Also, how will the results look like with Canon XL2?
Most importantly, Is the picture "Right Side Up" in the vu-finder?
Thanks,

Zia

If you want to see lowlight and crane/dolly work, you'll have to wait until the footage from beta testers begins streaming in. I'm done shooting for a while -- I need to concentrate on the business, and I personally don't have access to a crane...

I'm shipping a small batch of these to people early next week, so expect to get a wide range of stuff coming in shortly thereafter -- most of it off the DVX.

Render of yesterday's footage started at about 2am, and 7 hours later it's only 72% done :(

Difference in quality of the adapters: the Go35SD is a spruced up ground glass adapter, while the Pro is aimed a the same group of people excited by the G35. I'm one of them, and I now don't need to buy one because I've made it to my satisfaction. So, the difference in quality between the two is about the difference in quality between any well made ground glass adapter and the G35.

Let me ask: anyone have a link to high res footage from the G35 in lowlight? I'd like to see that...

I'll do a short test of two DVX's side-by-side shooting the same subject with both adapters once the release models arrive.

That difference is going to be adequate diffusion. Looks to me like the G35 has it (look at the xmas lights in the background of the videoclub sample, hi lux version?). If I was buying your adapter I'd want to see a rack through a point source of light. If there's any haze around an out of focus point of light with the SLR lens fully open then your GG doesn't diffuse enough (it should be a solid disc), otherwise it will deepen the effective DOF of your image and gives hazy bokeh (I feel like a broken record saying it).

There's plenty of clips with strong light behind a source, and in the clip I'm uploading right now there's interior flourescents in some of the clip (at B&H), so I don't understand how much more proof you'd need. Check the original "outside" series of clips again -- there's a ton of very blown out, brightly lit close-ups.

With any ground glass adapter there is a trade-off though, between light transmission and grain. I think as the SD goes to release I'll do some tests between different grades of glass to see what people prefer -- I can get ground glass much finer than any I've seen, but at some point it may prove prohibitive to do so.

None of these worries are true of the Pro -- it uses an entirely different diffuse material.

The only worry you have with the Pro is evident in underlit footage with flat light and big white spaces in the frame. Yesterday it was overcast, so not only was it "low light" by comparison to a sunny day, but the light was miserably flat. Combine those variables and you begin to run into issues shooting, e.g.
a group of white puppies, or someone dressed in white. A simple bounce boad would probably solve the problem, though.
