Go35Pro Footage

As I'm nearing development completion, I wanted to gather some links to make it less likely that they'd get lost in the random shuffle of the dev thread, which is something of an overgrown production diary and FAQ. This way if you've followed it from the beginning, you can just skip the bull and head straight to the juicy content :)

For those unfamiliar, the footage here involves the Pro version of what will be my commercial adapter, the Go35, and should cost in the neighborhood of $550-600. All footage is from a Canon GL1 unless otherwise noted, no CC, straight from NTSC DV .avi to QT7 2000kbps h.264.

The newest bit of business, random shots using a macro extension set.

Other recently shot clips can be seen here:

Outside Clip 1, Outside Clip2, Outside Clip 3.

There is also a bit of interior business in QT6 as well.

My apologoies for the somewhat sloppy nature of some of these shots -- working hard to get the adapter out the door leaves for little time to actually do some quality shooting... otherwise, some have pointed out some dust seen in shots and I'm almost embaraased to say that much of what's there is actually inside the lens of my cam :(

Within the coming weeks I'll have more footage to show, from different cams and under different shooting conditions. Please, stay tuned for what I hope are going to be some cool updates.

Jim, Friend....

This is why you have to call me. I Am unemployed, with DVX, and oly 20 minutes from you. You call, i come Make tests....... play with 35mm adapter...... you keeep working in garage.

With all the adapters out there it is getting harder and harder to decide which way to go...
Man, by now, there are more adapters than desirable cameras to choose from (in the semi-pro league of course...)
Most buyers will decide by the quality of the presented demo footage and rather spent 200$ more and have no grain and less light loss.
For all the effort you adapter guys have put into each variation of the known theme -
please, take the time to shoot sth interesting and quality-wise significant or ask someone to do it for you, best with ALL of the popular camera models.
Just my 2c.

that depth of field looks nice, but FAR FAR too shallow for anything but a close up IMHO. But thats the lens not the adapter. Looks nice though.

Im thinking of finding a nice static adapter, that has a bit of grain, cause for 250 ish, cant go wrong. plus they give a certain look to it, ya know?

I was fortuante enough to Use a Go35 today ( i met with Jim).

I will say this. IT is a VERY VERY VERY Nice piece of Kit.

Thanks Timur!

We met for about 15-20 minutes over coffee and unfortunately the whole thing was cramped -- I had to head to work. It was a convenient way to see how the Pro performed on a DVX and firm up what I need to know about achromats.

I'm very happy. Once I have time to set up a proper shoot, I'll post DVX footage, but meanwhile here's a still to whet appetites -- this is f/5.6 on the 50mm f1.4 I've got, Timur could tell you about the DVX's settings:

If I had to guess, I'd say you're looking at 1 stop loss with the Pro glass.

uhhhh

WEll, i highly suggest you shoot with +3 or +4 Detail. I shot this with -3 detail.
Cinegamma D
Everything else was at 0
Cinematrix.
PS notice the nice natural lens flare on the plate with the blue rim.

Seriously, I think this is one of the finest Static adapters available. If youre waiting for a G35, Dont bother, this machine will satisfy you amply, it is VERY sharp.

I prefer a Moving GG personally, Thats why i purchased an SGPRO, but i may just purchase a Go 35 as well, for more mobile shoots.

And thats my "Official Off the record 3rd party Opinion". :D

A note on using a 35mm adapter:

It is REALLLLLY disorienting to use these things wihtout a magnet o flip the LCD or a field monitor. to correct the image. Also, do not judge sharpness based on these sample clips. With the Go35 and The SG35(SGPRO) The only two adapters from which ive seen uncompressed DV clips, they are infinitely sharper than these Crushed WMV's and .Mov suggest. The secret is finding the sweet spot of the proper zoom setting and The Minimum object distance for the focus on the GG. While using the Go35 today my finer bumped the zoom ring, and just nudged teh focus off a hair. Thats why the Glass above seems soft. But ihave a Grab, that i will post with Jim's permission that shows exactlythe type of resolution this Adapter is capable of. IE: these adpters don't really lose any Res if you dial them in properly. If you get Soft footage you screwed up. Not the adapter.

A couple of questions : 1. Is this adapter for sale and at what price? and 2. THe footage posted seems to have interlace artifacts - any chance of some straight progressive to get an idea of the look?

Thanks

James

Jim and Timur,
thanks for finally teaming up!
Everybody on this site knows how well the DVX performs (even boooring XL2users like me...) so testing the Go35 with it should give everyone a good indication on the performance of the adapter.

Matthew,
if you want to know if this adapter will directly mount to the HD100, without the stocklens in between, let me tell you that you´ll need a relay lens for that.
Since most adapter manufacturers probably don´t think it is worth producing one for the few XL and HD100 users who´ll look into buying one, so far there are only two solutions out there, as far as I know: the Letus35XL (only works with canons xl series, but a version for the HD100 is next...) and, of course, the P+S mini35 original.
I can only hope, that ALL adapters will soon offer an optional relay lens - well the situation so far at least makes my decision an easy one...

But maybe Jim will come up with sth for a reasonable price...?

$550-600 -- I'm waiting on the final cost of one major component to determine the exact cost. I am taking pre-orders for the first 15 units at a reduced price of $430 -- spots are still open. Email me if you're interested at: info at go-35 dot com

Interlace artifacts -- yeah, I shot with my GL1, so I'm still a bit behind the curve and wanted to preserve res as much as possible. All the forthcoming footage will be in Frame mode or I'll just get the adapter on the DVX :)

Can it fit: yes. Is it suitable: I'm not sure. My guess is no. At that res and up you need a moving mechanism to be safe.

Dying to see the DVX footage. Mostly replying to bump and subscribe to the thread. Jim, you've made me a very happy director. You go boy!

430 huh? man, i would be sold but i would like to see another shot of your footage with a slightly deeper depth of field lens. got anything up your sleeve?

Yes. Updates today or tomorrow depending if I go out to shoot more and decide to include it with the footage I've recently shot -- all 50mm at f/5.6 or greater. Though today I might drag out the 35-70mm zoom since though it's an f/2.8 lens, on a sunny day you can do plenty of nice shooting at f/8 and f/11.

Pre-orders, yes. It will be shipping by mid May. Email me at info at go-35 dot com if you're interested...
